미호강 중·하류역의 공간적 특징과 성곽의 변천과정 연구

A Study on the Spatial Characteristics of the Mid and Lower reaches of the Miho River and the Transition Process of the Castles

본 논문은 중원지역의 서쪽에 해당하는 미호강 중·하류역 일대의 시대적 흐름에 따른 시기별 공간적 특징의 변화와 그에 따른 이 일대 성곽의 변천과정 간의 상관관계에 대하여 주목하였다. 지정학적 중요성으로 인하여 미호강 중·하류역 일대는 역사상의 전체적인 흐름 속에서 삼국시대부터 조선시대에 이르기까지 통사적으로 중요한 지역으로 여겨져 왔다. 이는 이 일대에 축조된 성곽들의 분포 양상과 기록에서 확인되는 군현, 서원경, 청주목 등으로 대표되는 행정단위의 모습으로 확인된다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 본 논문은 미호강 중하류역 일대에서 확인되는 공간적 성격을 군사적 성격, 행정적 성격의 두 가지 성격으로 설정하였으며, 각 성격에 따른 이 일대 공간의 특징변화와 이 일대 성곽의 변천과정 사이의 연관성을 확인하는 데 주목하였다. 분석 결과 미호강 중·하류역 일대의 성곽들은 중심지역인 청주 일대와 그 주변 지역이군사적, 혹은 국내의 정치적 상황에 따라 크게 행정적, 군사적 성격을 보였으며 그에 따라 성곽의 운용 양상도 함께 변화하는 모습을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 일대가 행정적 성격을 가질 때는 행정치소를 중심으로 하는 중심방어적 성격을 보이는 반면, 이 일대가 군사적 성격을 가질 때는 이 일대로 진입하는 교통로를 조망할 수 있는 지점을 위주로 성곽이 축조되는 양상을 확인할 수 있었다.

This study focused on the correlation between the changes in spatial characteristics by period according to the trend of the mid and lower reaches of the Miho River in the west of the Jungwon area and the transition process of the fortress in this area. Due to its geopolitical importance, the mid and lower reaches of the Miho River has been regarded as a historically important area from the Three Kingdoms period to the Joseon Dynasty in the overall flow of korean history. This is confirmed by the distribution pattern and records of the fortresses built in this area as an administrative unit represented by Gunhyeon, Seowongyeong, and Cheongjumok. In this context, this study set the spatial characteristics identified in the mid and lower reaches of the Miho River as two characteristics: military and administrative, and focused on confirming the relationship between the change in the characteristics of the area and the transition process of the fortress in the area according to each character. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the central area of Cheongju and the surrounding area of the Miho River showed significant administrative and military characteristics depending on the military or domestic political situation, and the operation pattern of the fortress also changed. When this area has an administrative character, it shows a central defense character centered on the administrative detention center, while when this area has a military character, it was possible to confirm the construction of the fortress around the point where you can see the traffic route entering the area.
