Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common acquired cardiac disorder in dogs, accounting for approximately 75–80% of all canine cardiac diseases. The clinical prognosis and quality of life in affected patients are influenced not only by stage-specific pharmacological management following the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines but also by the quality and consistency of comprehensive nursing care provided. This review synthesizes recent evidence regarding practical management strategies for MMVD, with particular emphasis on the critical roles of veterinary nurses. Key areas discussed include emergency care during episodes of congestive heart failure (CHF), in-hospital monitoring, caregiver education, and structured home-care support. Veterinary nurses play essential roles in stress reduction, monitoring diuretic efficacy and respiratory rate trends, ensuring medication adherence, and implementing nutritional and lifestyle management plans. The development and application of systematic nursing protocols, along with strengthening nursing professional competencies, contribute directly to improved survival outcomes and overall quality of life in MMVD patients. Therefore, high-quality veterinary nursing care represents a fundamental component in advancing standards of veterinary cardiology.
