대학의 실용영어 교육에 대한 대학생과 직장인 요구조사 - 수도권 대학을 중심으로

Learners’ Needs for Practical English Courses in General Education

본 연구는 대학 실용영어 교육이 실제 직무 현장의 요구와 얼마나 부합하는지를 규명하기 위해, 교육의 핵심 수요자인 재학생과 졸업생(직장인) 간의 인식 차이를 비교 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 수도권 4년제 대학 재학생과 졸업 후 직장에 재직 중인 직장인, 총 200명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문은 실용영어에 대한 경험, 만족도, 그리고 구체적인 교육 목표 및 내용에 대한요구 사항을 포함하였다. 연구 결과, 두 집단 모두 실용영어의 필요성에는 강하게 공감했으나, 구체적인교육 목표와 내용에서는 뚜렷한 인식 차이를 보였다. 재학생은 ‘회화 능력 향상’과 같은 일반적 의사소통역량에 높은 우선순위를 둔 반면, 직장인은 ‘업무 이메일 및 보고서 작성’, ‘직무 관련 발표’ 등 실제직무와 직접적으로 연관된 도구적 영어 능력을 훨씬 더 중요하게 인식했다. 이러한 결과는 현재 대학에서제공되는 획일적인 실용영어 교육과정이 실제 산업 현장의 구체적이고 전문화된 요구를 충분히 반영하지 못하는 ‘요구 격차(needs gap)’가 존재함을 시사한다. 이에 본 연구는 분석 결과를 바탕으로, 대학영어 교육과 실제 직무 현장의 요구 간의 격차를 해소하고, 학습자들의 실질적인 영어 능력을 함양하기위한 구체적인 교육과정 개선 방안을 제언하였다.

This study aims to investigate the alignment of university practical English education with the demands of the actual workplace by comparatively analyzing the perceptual differences between its key consumers: current university students and graduates (workers). To this end, a survey was conducted on 200 participants in the Seoul metropolitan area, comprising univeristiy students and graduates in the workforce. The questionnaire examined their experiences, satisfaction levels, and specific needs regarding the goals and content of practical English education. The findings revealed that while both groups strongly agreed on the necessity of practical English, a significant ‘needs gap’ existed in their perceptions of its specific educational objectives and content. Students placed a high priority on general communicative competence, such as improving daily conversation skills. In contrast, workers emphasized instrumental English skills directly related to their jobs, such as writing business emails and reports, and giving work-related presentations. These results suggest that the current one-size-fits-all practical English curriculum at universities does not sufficiently reflect the specific and specialized demands of the professional world. Based on these findings, this study proposes practical curricular improvements aimed at closing the gap between university English education and workplace needs, ultimately enhancing students' practical English proficiency.
