본 연구는 1970년대까지 우리나라에서 발행된 문고본을 대상으로, 문헌에 나타난 논의를 토대로 문고본 출판의 전개 양상과 서지학적 특성을 구조적으로 재구성하는 데 목적을 두었다. 문고본 실물의 전수 조사보다는 선행 연구와 서지 자료에 제시된 기술을 분석 대상으로 삼아, 발행 시기와 출판사 등의 특성을 중심으로 시기별 변화 양상을 검토하였다. 연구 결과, 한국 문고본 출판은 ‘문고본의 실험적 출현(1910~1930년대)’, ‘해방기 문고본의 재편(1940 ~1950년대)’, ‘문고본의 전성기(1960~1970년대)’의 세 국면으로 구분될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 서지학적 특성은 초기의 소형·저가 중심 실험 단계에서 연속 간행 체재의 강화, 나아가 판형과 체재의 표준화 및 장르적 확산으로 점진적으로 변화하였다. 이러한 결과는 문고본이 단순한 소형 책이 아니라 특정 시대의 출판 기획과 독서 환경을 반영한 출판 형식으로 제도화되어 왔음을 보여준다.
This study aims to structurally reconstruct the developmental trajectory and bibliographical characteristics of Korean pocketbooks published up to the 1970s, based on discussions presented in existing literature. Rather than conducting a comprehensive survey of physical copies, this research analyzes descriptions and arguments found in prior studies and bibliographical sources, examining period-specific changes with particular attention to publication periods and publishers. The findings indicate that the history of Korean pocketbook publishing can be divided into three distinct phases: the experimental emergence of pocketbooks (1910s–1930s), the reorganization of pocketbook publishing during the post-liberation period (1940s–1950s), and the golden age of pocketbooks (1960s–1970s). In terms of bibliographical characteristics, pocketbooks evolved progressively from an early experimental stage characterized by small format and low price, through the strengthening of serialized publication formats, toward the standardization of book size and structure alongside genre diversification. These results demonstrate that pocketbooks in Korea were not merely reduced-size books but rather became an institutionalized publishing format reflecting the publishing strategies and reading environments of specific historical periods.
