책문화자본의 개념 고찰 : 부르디외의 문화자본 이론을 중심으로

A Conceptual Exploration of Book Cultural Capital : Focusing on Bourdieu’s Theory of Cultural Capital

본 연구는 부르디외의 문화자본 이론을 중심으로 책문화자본의 개념을 고찰해 보는 데 연구목적이 있다. 책문화자본은 책이 생산, 유통, 수용, 기억되는 전 과정을 하나의 자본순환 구조로 묶어내는 개념으로서 부르디외의 세 가지 문화자본을 책문화생태계 전체에 재배치하여 이해할 필요가 있다. 부르디외가 제시한 문화자본의 세 가지 형태(체화·객관화·제도화)는 책과 독서의 사회적 위계를 구성하는 핵심 구조이며, 아비투스와 장 개념은 책문화자본이 개인의 선택이 아니라 사회적으로 조직된 축적과 재생산 과정임을 해명하는 분석 틀로 기능했다.책문화자본은저술-출판-서점-도서관-독서로이어지는 책문화생태계가 순환하는 전 과정에서 텍스트와 지식의 사회적 축적, 독서와 사유 역량의 내면화, 교육·비평·정책의 인증과 공공적 매개가 상호 전환되며 순환하는 복합적인 자본으로 제안하였다. 또한 책을 매개로 한 문화적 불평등과 공공정책의 개입 가능성을 고찰하였다.

This study examined the concept of book cultural capital by drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital. Book cultural capital is proposed as a conceptual framework that integrates the entire process through which books are produced, distributed, received, and remembered into a single circulatory structure of capital. In doing so, it requires repositioning Bourdieu’s three forms of cultural capital across the whole book culture ecosystem. Bourdieu’s three forms of cultural capital—embodied, objectified, and institutionalized—constitute the core structure that shapes the social hierarchy of books and reading. Furthermore, the concepts of habitus and field served as analytical frameworks that reveal book cultural capital as a socially organized process of accumulation and reproduction, rather than an outcome of individual choice. Book cultural capital is thus proposed as a composite form of capital in which the social accumulation of texts/knowledge, the internalization of reading and thinking competencies, and the institutional recognition and public mediation provided by education, criticism, and policy are continuously transformed and circulated across the entire book culture ecosystem—from writing and publishing to distribution, libraries, and reading. The study also explored cultural inequalities mediated through books and the potential for public policy interventions.
