투광효과 도자기의 ‘투명성’ 시각효과에 관한 연구 - 신토 아키라와 이인화의 작품을 중심으로

Variations in the Visual Perception of “Transparency” in Light-Transmitting Ceramics : Focus on the Works of Akio Niisato and Lee In-Hwa

투광 효과를 지닌 도자기가 동양의 전통 박태 자기와 서양의 본차이나에서 비롯되어 현대 도예에 이르러 더욱 다양화된 시각적 표현으로 발전해 왔음을 고찰한다. 본 연구는재료, 구조 등 다양한 요소들의 다층적 결합은 투광 도자 작품의 표현 효과를 더욱 유연하게 변화·확장시키고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 투명성 관련 선행 문헌과 투광성 도자에 관한 연구를 검토하여 투명성을 구현한 현대 도자 작품을 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해 일본 작가 신토 아키라와 한국 작가 이인화의 작품을 선정하였으며, 작품의 가시적 투명성은 투광 효과에 영향을 미치는 세 가지 요소 ‘기벽 두께’, ‘재료 배합’, ‘투광 유약’을 통해 분석하고, 현상적 투명성은 로잘린드 크라우스(Rosalind Krauss)의 ‘맥박(pulse)’ 개념을 핵심 이론으로 삼아 비교 분석을 진행하였다. 본 연구는 투명성 개념과 투명성을 구현한 도자 작품에 대한 종합적 고찰을 바탕으로, 투광 효과 도자기의 발전적 관점에서 향후 다양한 응용적 측면의 가능성을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

A study on light-transmitting ceramics: examining transparency through the works of Akio Niisato and Lee In-hwa light-transmitting ceramics trace their origins to traditional Eastern thin-bodied porcelain and Western bone china, evolving in contemporary ceramic art to encompass increasingly diverse visual expressions. The multi-layered integration of elements such as materials and structure has enabled more flexible and expansive expressive effects in light-transmitting ceramic works. This study examines prior literature on transparency and research regarding light-transmitting ceramics to analyze contemporary ceramic works embodying transparency. For this purpose, the works of Japanese artist Akio Niisato and Korean artist Lee In-hwa were selected. The literal transparency of their works was analyzed through three factors influencing light transmission—'wall thickness', 'material composition', and 'light-transmitting glaze'—while phenomenal transparency was examined using Rosalind Krauss's 'Pulse' concept as the core theoretical framework for comparative analysis. Through a comprehensive analysis of transparency and its manifestations in ceramic art, this study contributes to the field by outlining a future trajectory for the diverse application of light-transmitting ceramics.
