파주･고양 지역 조선 후기 봉수로 재검토

Reexamining the Beacon-Fire Routes in Paju and Goyang during the Late Joseon Period

본 연구는 조선시대 봉수체계의 유용성을 확인하기 위하여 경기도 북부 파주와 고 양지역에 있었던 봉수 3로와 봉수 4로 봉수간의 경보 전달 가능성에 대해 실증적으로 검토 한 것이다. 파주의 도라산·대산 봉수와 고양의 독산·고봉·해포·봉산 봉수, 한양의 모악·남산 봉수에 대한 현장 답사와 관측을 실시하여, 서로 연계되어 있는 봉수들 사이에는 상호 관측 이 가능하였음을 확인하였다. 고양 소재 해포 봉수는 봉수 3로가 아닌 봉수 4로에 속한 봉 수였고, 해포 봉수의 신호를 받는 봉수는 한성 모악[무악] 동봉이 아닌 서봉 봉수였음을 규 명하였다. 그러므로 봉수 3로의 경로는 파주 도라산 - 파주 대산 - 고양 독산 - [고양 봉산] - 한성 모악 동봉 - 목멱산 3소였고, 봉수 4로는 고양 고봉 – 고양 해포 - 모악 서봉 – 목 멱산 4소의 경로를 따랐던 것이다. 문헌 자료의 내용을 바탕으로 하되 현장을 직접 조사하 여 사실을 확인하려 한 본 연구는 전근대 시기의 시설이나 운영 체제에 대한 실증적 검토의 실마리가 될 것이다.

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Joseon-period beacon-fire communication network by empirically examining the feasibility of alarm transmission among the beacon stations of Routes 3 and 4 in Paju and Goyang, located in northern Gyeonggi Province. Through verification of the geographical positions of the Dorasan and Daesan stations in Paju; the Doksan, Gobong, Haepo, and Bongsan stations in Goyang; and the Moak and Namsan stations in Hanyang, combined with extensive field surveys and visibility observations, the research confirms that mutual observation was achievable among interconnected stations. The findings further reveal that the Haepo beacon belonged to Route 4 rather than Route 3, and that its signals were relayed to Moak’s western peak, not the eastern peak as previously assumed. Accordingly, Route 3 should be understood as following the path Dorasan – Daesan – Doksan – Bongsan – Moak East Peak – Mongmyeoksan Station No. 3, while Route 4 followed Gobong – Haepo – Moak West Peak – Mongmyeoksan Station No. 4. By prioritizing direct field investigation over exclusive reliance on documentary sources, this study underscores the value of empirical verification in reassessing premodern communication infrastructures. The findings contribute a methodological foundation for future empirical studies on premodern state facilities and administrative systems.
