신라 후기 고분의 목관에 대한 연구시론

A Preliminary Study on Wooden Coffins in the Late Silla Burial System

본고는 신라 후기 고분에서 출토된 목관부속구를 통해 목관 구조 및 목관부속구의 단계적 변화와그 의미를 검토하였다. 그 결과 신라 후기 고분의 장법은 석축 시상대의 직장법만으로 설명될 수 없으며, 목관장이 병존하는 이원적 체계였음이 확인된다. 1단계에는 왕경인 경주에서 직장이 표준화되는 반면 변경 지방의 (초)대형 무덤에서는 특대형 꺾쇠조합 목관과 대형 부속구가 다양하게 나타나고, 운구 개념이 반영된 관고리가 부착되지만 실제 장법은설치식 목관 중심의 전통적 운영이 유지되었다. 이 단계의 목관과 부속구의 다양성은 백제계에 한정되지 않는 북방계 등 복수의 문화요소가 반영된 결과이다. 2단계에는 지역성을 띠는 횡혈계 묘제가 전역으로 확산되는 가운데 목관장이 가장 성행하며, (초)대형에서 중·소형 석(곽)실로까지 확대된다. 목관은 특대형에서 중·대형으로 축소되고 Ⅱ식에서 Ⅰ식으로 구조가 전환되며, 관고리의 보편화와 함께‘들어 나르는 관’의 기능이 정착한다. 3단계에는 영남권에서 직장화가 심화되나 중부지방에서는 목관장이 지속되고, 동시에 목관과 부속구의 소형화·규격화가 뚜렷해진다. 이는 목관의 제작·공급체계가 다원적 구조에서 점차 일원화되어 가는 방향으로 재편되었음을 시사하는 것으로 추정된다.

This study examines wooden-coffin structures and phased changes in coffin fittings in late Silla tombs based on excavated hardware. The results show that late Silla mortuary practice was not reducible to direct interment on stone-built biers; wooden-coffin burial coexisted with it as a dual system, despite regional variation. In Phase 1, direct interment was standardized early in the royal capital of Gyeongju, while frontier regions continued wooden-coffin burial in large chamber tombs. Coffins were typically very large, reinforced with heavy L-shaped brackets and diverse large fittings; coffin rings introduced a transportable-coffin concept, though most coffins still functioned as pre-installed units. This variability reflects multiple cultural components, including Baekje-related and northern influences. Phase 2 saw the territory-wide spread of horizontal-entrance stone-chamber tombs and the peak of wooden-coffin burial, extending into medium and small stone chambers/cists. Coffins became smaller and lighter, shifting to nail-assembled constructions, and transportable coffins with standardized rings became common. In Phase 3, as chamber tombs declined and stone-cist burials became dominant, direct interment intensified in Yeongnam, whereas wooden-coffin burial persisted in the central region. Concurrent miniaturization and standardization of coffins and fittings suggest a shift toward a more unified manufacture-and-supply system.
