백암 박은식의 고조선사 인식과 『단조사고(檀祖事攷)』

The Study of Baekam Park Eun-sik’s Perception of Gojoseon History and Danjosago

이 논문은 백암 박은식의 고조선사 관련 저술을 『단조사고』』의 안설 부분과 비교ㆍ검토하여 『단조사고』의 저자 논란 문제를 규명하고, 이 책의 실질적인 저자와 박은식의 역할을 추정한 글이다. 박은식의 저작에서는 『단조사고』 안설에서 주장한 내용과 유사한 양상이 발견되기도 한다. 그러나 단군이 최초로 도읍하였다는 평양의 위치를 비정하고, 단군조선의 역년을 산정하는 방식에서는 현저한 차이가 있다. 특히 그는 고조선사 이해를 인류 문명 전체의 발전 단계와 연관 지어 파악하려 하였다. 따라서 이러한 차이는 고조선사의 이해를 넘어 그가 지닌 문명관과 역사 발전 인식 전반에 변화를 초래한다. 이 점에서, 『단조사고』에 실린 안설의 저자를 박은식으로 보기에는 무리가 있다. 오히려 『단조사고』 안설의 주요 주장은 김교헌이 지은 『신단실기』와 『신단민사』에서 확인된다. 그러므로 『단조사고』의 실질적인 저자는 김교헌으로 판단된다. 박은식은 이 책을 편찬하기 위해 자료를 수집하는 과정에만 참여하였을 것으로 추정된다. 결국 박은식의 고조선사 인식을 검토하기 위한 자료에서 『단조사고』는 제외되어야 한다고 판단된다. 다만, 대종교의 역할을 높이 평가하면서도 역사 인식이 충돌하는 지점에서는 이를 분리하여 독자의 판단을 유지하려 한 그의 태도는 높이 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

This article examines Baekam Park Eun-sik’s writings on Gojoseon by comparing them with the Anseol(按說, critical commentary) section of Danjosago(檀祖事攷). The aim is to address the controversy over the authorship of Danjosago and to identify its substantive author, as well as Park Eun-sik’s role in its compilation. Park Eun-sik’s works display certain similarities to the arguments presented in the Anseol of Danjosago. However, clear differences emerge in his identification of Pyongyang as the site of Dangun’s initial capital and in the methods used to calculate the chronology of Dangun Gojoseon. In particular, he sought to understand Gojoseon history in relation to the overall stages of human civilizational development. These differences go beyond divergent interpretations of Gojoseon history; they instead reflect fundamental distinctions in views of civilization and historical development. From this perspective, it is difficult to attribute the authorship of the Anseol in Danjosago to Park Eun-sik. Rather, the principal arguments found in the Anseol closely correspond to those presented in Kim Gyo-heon’s works, Sindansilgi(神檀實記) and Sindanminsa(神檀民史). Accordingly, this study concludes that Kim Gyo-heon should be regarded as the substantive author of Danjosago, while Park Eun-sik likely participated only in the collection of materials during the process of its compilation.
