A Study on Music Creation in the TV Drama Dream of the Red Chamber : Taking Wang Ning Mei and Cong Ming Lei as Examples

The prelude and twelve musical pieces of the 1987 version of Dream of the Red Chamber were composed by Wang Liping (1987), a quintessential embodiment of his distinctive musical style. These works, characterized by their clear thematic focus and profound depth, employ diverse compositional techniques to vividly portray the characters in the play. This article examines the musical background and analyzes three representative pieces, Wang Ning Mei and Cong Ming Lei , to explore Wang Liping’s creative approach and artistic significance in the musical adaptation of Dream of the Red Chamber.
