Narrative Strategies for the Representation of Female Characters in Liegouk Ji(列國志)

《열국지》는 춘추전국 시기를 서사화한 방대한 역사소설로, ‘역사의 소설화’와 ‘소설의 역사화’라는 이중적 특성을 가진 텍스트이다. 이 책은 방대한 양과 풍부한 서사만큼이나 대표적인 남성 중심의 정치와 전쟁 서사로 인식되고 있다. 이처럼 견고한 남성 중심 서사의 이면을 깊이 들여다보면, 여성 인물들이 서사의 결정적 전환점에서 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 그 틈새에 천착하고자 한다. 《열국지》의 여성 서사를 발굴하고 그 이면의 의미를 현대적 관점에서 재조명함으로써, 여성 인물의 재서사화 가능성을 모색했다. 본 고에서는 먼저 《열국지》에 등장하는 여성 인물을 재앙의 원인, 정치적 도구, 규범의 체현자 세 가지 범주로 분류라고, 혐오, 경계 짓기, 타자화라는 세 가지 핵심 서사 전략을 중심으로 분석했다. 이 같은 서사 전략을 분석함으로써 남성 중심의 중국 고전 서사가 여성을 어떻게 구성하고 통제했는지, 그리고 그것이 지닌 이데올로기적 함의는 무엇인지에 대해 규명했다.

Liegouk Ji(列國志) is a vast historical novel that narrativizes the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods across 108 chapters, possessing the dual characteristics of ‘novelization of history’ and ‘historicization of the novel.’ This work is recognized as a representative male-centered narrative of politics and warfare, as much for its massive scope and rich storytelling as for this gendered perspective. The struggle for hegemony among feudal states, the victories and defeats of wars, diplomatic stratagems and political machinations constitute the central axis of the narrative, with the wisdom and martial prowess of male heroes depicted as the primary driving force determining the course of history. This male-centeredness permeates the entire text, from the work’s narrative structure to the narrative perspective and standards of value judgment. When one looks deeply beneath this solid male-centered narrative, however, one can discover that female characters play extremely important roles at critical turning points in the narrative. Female characters provide opportunities that influence the rise and fall of nations, serve as catalysts for dramatic transformations in male characters’ fates, or are sometimes identified as hidden causes of historical events. Yet while they clearly function as major narrative drivers, they are thoroughly absent or marginalized as narrative subjects—a profound paradox. This study therefore seeks to delve into that gap. Female characters in Liegouk Ji(列國志) are represented as objects of aversion and contempt, or pushed beyond the boundaries of male-centered order, and as a result are designated as absolute others. By analyzing these narrative strategies, we can elucidate how male-centered Chinese classical narratives constructed and controlled women, and what ideological implications this carries. This will be both a critical reading of Liegouk Ji(列國志), which has been read as a male-centered narrative until now, and part of an effort to discover the modernity and multidimensionality inherent in Liegouk Ji(列國志).
