Japanese Composition Pedagogy and the Governor-General of Korea Prize Essay Contest in Colonial Korea

본고는 중일전쟁 이후, 전시체제가 본격화되는 가운데, 일본어가 강조된 제3차 교육령 개정을 맞이하여 조선반도에서 일본인과 조선인 소학생을 대상으로 개최된 조선총독상 글짓기 경연대회를 일본 글짓기 교육사 속에서 검토한 논문이다. 조선총독상 글짓기 경연대회는 1938년 11월에 제1회를 맞이해, 1944년까지 7회에 걸쳐 개최되었지만, 현재 남아있는 것은 제1회와 제2회뿐이다. 일본인이 주도한 식민지조선의 교육제도 속에서 조선총독상 글짓기 경연대회를 일본 글짓기 교육 사조와 검토한 결과, 생활주의와 황국주의의 경계에 위치하고 있었다. 조선총독상 글짓기 경연대회의 우수작들을 생활주의인 ‘비(非)전쟁’과 황국주의인 ‘전쟁’으로 나누어 보면, ‘비(非)전쟁’ 소재의 어린이 글짓기들이 압도적으로 많은 수를 차지하고 있다. 이는 본토에서 지방출신 교사들이 어린이 생활을 지도하기 위해 전개하였던 생활글짓기운동의 영향으로 생활과 밀착된 어린이들의 사실성 있는 글들이 우수작으로 대거 선정될 수 있었음을 알 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 조선총독상 글짓기 경연대회가 단지 전시하 황국신민화 정책의 내선일체 이벤트로 단순화하기 보다는, 당시 어린이들의 생활상이 생생하게 담긴 소중한 자료로서 그 가치를 평가해야 한다.

This paper examines the Governor-General of Korea Prize Essay Contest, held for Japanese and Korean elementary school students after the Third Revision of the Education Ordinance, implemented during Japan’s wartime mobilization following the Sino-Japanese War. The contest ran from 1938 to 1944, though records survive only for its first two iterations. Analyzing the event within the history of Japanese composition education and the colonial school system reveals that it occupied a middle ground between life-ism and Imperial Subject-ism. A thematic classification of the prize-winning essays — into “Non-War” themes linked to life-ism and “War” themes tied to Imperial Subject-ism — shows a clear predominance of Non-War topics. This indicates that the life-based composition movement in Japan, which encouraged children to write from firsthand experience, strongly influenced the contest even in colonial Korea. Consequently, realistic, experience-oriented writings reflecting children’s daily lives were frequently selected. These findings show that the contest cannot be understood solely as a tool of wartime Japan–Korea unity (內鮮一體) or the broader Kōminka policy. Instead, it should be recognized as a valuable historical source that captures the everyday lives of children and reveals how ordinary experience endured within the constraints of a wartime colonial education system.
