The Doctrine of the Trinity - New Issues and Prospects

본 논문은 20세기 중후반 이후로 오늘날 “삼위일체신학의 르네상스 또는 부흥”을 맞이하고 있는 현대 삼위일체신학을 다루어, 이것의 계기를 분석하고 발전과 확장을 정리하며 또한 앞으로의 새로운 쟁점과 전망을 제시하고자 한다. 현대 삼위일체신학의 부흥에는 칼 바르트, 블라디미르 로스키, 존 지지울라스, 칼 라너, 스탠리 그렌츠 등등의 신학적 작업들이 중요한 역할을 감당하였다. 가장 중추적인 추동력은 바로 경륜적 삼위일체와 내재적 삼위일체와의 관계에 관한 논의이다. 그리고 이러한 논의와 관련하여 신적 감동성, 신정론, 사회적 삼위일체론 등등이 활발하게 토론되고 있다. 또한, 하나님과 인간, 하나님과 교회, 하나님과 사회, 하나님과 세계, 하나님과 우주/만물에 관한 주제들에로 확장되고 있다. 특히, ‘하나님의 선교(missio Dei)’ 개념, ‘정의로운 평화(just peace)’ 개념, 신학과 과학과의 대화, 그리고 오늘날 종교다원성 시대에서의 타종교와의 만남과 대화 등등의 주제들에 대해서도 삼위일체론이 논의되고 있다. 본 논문은 현대 삼위일체신학이 앞으로 계속 더 풍성하게 및 더 확고하게 논의되기 위해서는 이를 위한 충분하고 온전한 존재론과 인식론이 새롭게 확립될 필요가 있다고 제안한다. 가장 최근에 새롭게 진행되고 있는 “새로운 삼위일체적 존재론”이라는 연구프로젝트, 또는 이정용과 김흡영처럼 동양적 아시아적 한국적 사유와 논리를 바탕으로 시도하는 접근들이 새로운 통찰을 제시하여 줄 수 있다고 기대된다. 이러한 작업을 바탕으로 삼위일체론이 지닌 모든 교회들의 일치 또는 모든 그리스도인들의 연합의 형성을 위한 중요한 의미를 오늘날 되살릴 수 있으리라 기대된다.

This paper deals with contemporary trinitarian theology, which has experienced “a renaissance or a revival of trinitarian theology” since the mid/late twentieth century. It analyzes the main factors that initiated this renewal, to trace its development and expansion, and to suggest new issues and prospects. Such revival has been significantly shaped by Karl Barth, Vladimir Lossky, John Zizioulas, Karl Rahner, Stanley Grenz, and others. The most central driving force behind it lies in the discussion concerning the relationship between the economic Trinity and the immanent Trinity. With regards to this theme, divine passibility, theodicy, and social trinitarianism have been vigorously discussed. And it has expanded to deal with themes such as God and humanity, God and church, God and society, God and the world, and God and cosmos/creation. In particular, the concept of missio Dei, the idea of just peace, the dialogue between theology and science, and the interreligious encounter and dialogue in today’s pluralistic context have been also discussed. This paper proposes that a sufficiently comprehensive and coherent ontology and epistemology should be newly articulated for its further development. A recent project “New Trinitarian Ontologies” and also some Eastern, Asian, Korean approaches including those of Jung Young Lee and Heup Young Kim are expected to offer fresh insights. On the basis of such development, the doctrine of the Trinity may once again illuminate its profound significance for the unity of all churches and the communion of all Christians today.
