Damiano Romano and the Origins of Antivichismo

본 연구의 목적은 18세기 나폴리의 가톨릭 법률가 다미아노 로마노(Damiano Romano)의 비평을 통해 가톨릭 안티비키즈모(Antivichismo)의 형성과 그 사상적 의미를 분석하는 것이다. 로마노는 반종교개혁 이후 가톨릭 호교론이 기대고 있던 성서에 대한 문자 그대로의 해석, 교부들의 견해 그리고 고대 저자들의 권위에 비추어 비코가 제시한 역사 발전의 원리 안에 내재한 이단적 속성을 광범위하게 비판했다. 로마노의 비평은 비코 사상이 갖는 혁신적인 성격뿐만 아니라 근대의 새로운 사유 체계에 대한 당대 가톨릭 세계의 반응을 생생하게 보여준다.

This study aims to analyze the formation of Antivichismo and its intellectual significance through the critiques of the eighteenth-century Neapolitan Catholic jurist Damiano Romano. Grounded in the post–Counter-Reformation Catholic apologetic tradition－based on the literal interpretation of Scripture, the authority of the Church Fathers, and the credibility of ancient authors－Romano offered an extensive critique of the heterodox elements he believed to be embedded in Vico’s principles of historical development. His criticisms reveal not only the innovative character of Vico’s thought but also the ways in which the Catholic world of the time responded to the emerging intellectual frameworks of the modern age.
