In 1925, the student community in Guangzhou was in a developmental phase, continuously fostering patriotic and anti-imperialist sentiments under the leadership of the Communist Party and Youth League organizations in Guangdong. In May, the May 30th Massacre erupted, sparking righteous resistance against imperialism among Guangzhou students. Students from public schools, missionary institutions, and the Whampoa Student Army, among others, participated in the June 23rd Struggle Movement but witnessed the horrific Shaji Massacre. In response, Guangzhou students actively engaged in propaganda, mobilization, and demonstrations, driving the subsequent developments of the Shaji incident. Through this event, Guangzhou students achieved unity under the banner of anti-imperialism, fostering further consolidation within the student community. This strengthened the anti-imperialist movement in Guangzhou and sowed the seeds for the subsequent Canton-Hong Kong Strike. Meanwhile, the issues exposed by the Shaji incident and the students’ actions and experiences during the event revealed the contradictions between the Kuomintang-Communist cooperation and imperialism at the time.
