정서적 경험을 탐구하는 질적 연구 방법: Glaser 근거이론을 중심으로 비교연구

A Qualitative Inquiry into Emotional Experience: A Comparative Review with a Focus on Glaser’s Grounded Theory Method

본 연구는 참여자의 정서적 경험을 탐구하는 질적 연구에서 근거이론 접근의 선택이 분석 산출물에 미치는 영향을 검토하기 위하여, 고전적 근거이론(Classic Grounded Theory; Glaser), 스트라우시안 근거이론(Strauss & Corbin), 구성주의 근거이론(Charmaz), 상황분석(Clarke)을 방법론적으로 비교·분석하였다. 주요원전 및 방법론 문헌을 중심으로 (a) 철학적 전제, (b) 연구자 역할, (c) 분석 절차와 코딩 논리, (d) 문헌검토의 위치, (e) 산출물의 성격을 공통 비교 차원으로 설정하여 비교 분석을 수행하였다. 비교 결과, Classic GT는 창발성(emergence)과 지속적 비교 분석을 통해 '기본적 사회과정(BSP)' 수준의 중범위 이론을 생성하는데 상대적으로 강점을 보이는 반면, 다른 접근들은 설명틀의 구조화, 해석의 반성성, 다층 맥락 연결에 각기 다른 장점을 보였다. 또한 본 논문은 정서 경험 연구 맥락에서 Classic GT의 핵심 절차(실질적 코딩–이론적 코딩, 메모 작성, 이론적 표집과 포화, 이론화)의 실제 적용 지침을 제시하고, 연구 목적·참여자 특성·분석 목표에 따라 접근을 선택할 수 있는 의사결정 프레임워크를 제안한다.

This study examines how the choice of a grounded theory approach influences analytic outcomes in qualitative research on participants' emotional experiences. To this end, four major grounded theory approaches—Classic Grounded Theory (Glaser), Straussian Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin), Constructivist Grounded Theory (Charmaz), and Situational Analysis (Clarke)—were methodologically compared and synthesized. Drawing on seminal texts and authoritative methodological literature, a comparative analysis was conducted across shared analytic dimensions: (a) philosophical assumptions, (b) the role of the researcher, (c) analytic procedures and coding logic, (d) the timing and function of the literature review, and (e) the nature of analytic outcomes. The findings indicate that Classic Grounded Theory demonstrates a relative strength in generating middle-range theories at the level of Basic Social Processes (BSP) through its emphasis on emergence and constant comparative analysis, whereas other approaches offer distinct advantages in terms of structured explanatory frameworks, reflexive interpretation, and multi-layered contextual integration. In addition, this paper provides practical methodological guidelines for applying the core procedures of Classic Grounded Theory in research on emotional experience—including substantive and theoretical coding, memo writing, theoretical sampling and saturation, and theory generation—and proposes a decision-making framework to guide the selection of grounded theory approaches according to research aims, participant characteristics, and analytic objectives.
