The Imagination of the Afterlife : A Comparative Study of The Tale of Seol Gongchan and the “Rebirth” Narratives in Taiping Guangj

본 연구는 『태평광기』「재생(再生)」류와 『설공찬전』을 비교하여, 당대(唐代) 설화를 북송 초의 제도적 질서 의식으로 재구성한 중국 저승관과 조선 초기 한국의 저승관 및 정의 인식 차이를 규명하였다. 『태평광기』의 저승은 염라대왕을 중심으로 한위계적 명부 체계와 절차적 심판이 작동하는 제도적 공간으로, 당대의 유·불·도 삼교융합 사상을 계승하면서도 북송 초(北宋 初) 편찬자의 제도적 시각이 더해져 초월적정의를 제도적으로 구현한다. 반면 『설공찬전』의 저승은 통치 질서가 불분명하며 공찬이 명부의 제약 없이 빙의를 통해 직접 원한을 해소하는 주체로 그려진다. 이러한 차이는 당대에서 북송 초로 이어지는 중국의 삼교 혼융과 관료제적 질서, 그리고 조선의 성리학적 질서와 제한된 법제라는 사회문화적 기반의 차이에서 비롯된다.

This study systematically compares the order and judgment structure of the afterlife depicted in 『Taiping Guangji』 “Rebirth (再生)” narratives and 『The Tale of Seol Gongchan』, elucidating the differences in perceptions of the underworld and justice between Song-dynasty China and mid-Joseon Korea. The underworld in 『 Taiping Guangji』 “Rebirth” narratives is characterized by a hierarchical bureaucratic system centered on King Yama (閻羅大王) and a procedural judgment process, forming a space where Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism coexist on different levels. The dead appear as passive recipients of verdicts, and justice is ultimately realized through institutional order. In contrast, the underworld in 『The Tale of Seol Gongchan』 lacks a clear governing structure, and the protagonist Gongchan, unbound by the authority of the netherworld bureaucracy, freely traverses between the worlds of the living and the dead through spirit possession, emerging as an autonomous speaking subject. These differences stem from distinct socio-cultural contexts: the syncretism of the Three Teachings and bureaucratic expansion in the Song dynasty versus the Neo-Confucian system and limited legal redress of mid-Joseon Korea. This study reveals that the differing modes of return—rebirth and possession—reflect each society’s degree of trust in institutions and its conception of justice.
