Study on Lee Byunghaeng’s Annotations of the “Treatise on Nature and Order 性命論” in The Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine 東醫壽世保元

Objectives : Investigation into the chapter 'Treatise on Nature and Order' of the The Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine has been sparse due to the text's complexity despite the rise in popularity of the Four Constitutional Medicine in the 1960s. In this study, annotations made by doctor Lee, Byunghaeng(BH) on the said chapter was analyzed to verify its academic meaning and intentions of the author, Lee, Jema. Methods : The entirety of Lee BH's six papers consecutively published in the journal Uirim (醫林) from 1966 to 1967 were analyzed. Based on the Dongmugongju[Sir Dongmu's annotations, 東武公註] which are known to be those of the author himself, and texts such as I-ching (易經), Lee BH's translations and interpretations of verses were examined. Results : Lee BH understood the Cheon-Gi[heavenly frame, 天機] as a four-fold construction of Wood-Fire-Metal-Water, and reinterpreted Inryun[human relations, 人倫] as 'humanity', an objective entity, to emphasize a human-centered world view. In addition, he related the role of Shen-Ling-Hun-Po (神靈魂魄) to practical abilities such as national examinations and public occupations and social actions, interpreting Lee Jema's philosophy as a practical system succeeding the Neo-Confuciansm of Joseon yet focusing on peoples' practical desires, through the relationship between Nature and Emotions. Conclusions : Lee BH's study can be understood as the first annotation work on the 'Treatise on Nature and Order' of the The Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine. It is an important project that made attempts to shift the complex, philosophical verses of the text to a humanities based practical thinking. Such findings hold significant implications to further studies on the 'Treateis on Nature and Order' of today, along with re-constructing the modern and contemporary history of research on Four Constitution Medicine.
