(Background and Purpose) The monotonous visual environment and spatial constraints of long tunnels can induce vigilance decrement, reducing driver alertness and negatively impacting traffic safety. This study integrates psychological theories and spatial theories to systematically analyze the effects of a tunnel’s visual environment on drivers’ psychological states and alertness, proposing design guidelines to maximize safety and efficiency based on these findings. (Method) This study employed a Convergent approach to investigate the effects of lighting, color, graphics, and spatial characteristics of long road tunnels on drivers’ cognitive load and alertness through systematic analysis. First, a theoretical framework tailored to the spatial characteristics of long tunnel environments was established by integrating psychological theories such as the Yerkes-Dodson Law, Arousal Theory, and Resource Theory with spatial theories including Bollnow’s “experienced space,” Tuan’s “sense of place,” and Hall’s “proxemics.” Second, an in-depth analysis was conducted on four operational long tunnels (Lærdal, Zhongnanshan, Xuefengshan, and A86). The spatial attributes (width, height, length), lighting characteristics (color temperature, illuminance, patterns), and structural configurations (emergency exits, large turnarounds, multi-level structures) of these tunnels were compared and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Finally, design implications for improving the visual environment of long tunnels were derived by synthesizing the theoretical framework and empirical analysis results. (Results) The analysis revealed that visual monotony, psychological pressure, and excessive lighting stimuli in long tunnels are primary factors contributing to reduced driver alertness. Notably, a marked vigilance decrement and decline in alertness were observed in tunnels exceeding 8 km in length. Color temperatures between 4,000–5,000K and dynamic lighting patterns were found to be effective in maintaining arousal and reducing fatigue. Additionally, the presence of emergency exits or large turnarounds (spaced 5–10 minutes apart) and a minimum lane width of 9 meters significantly alleviated monotony and anxiety. The Lærdal Tunnel was evaluated as an optimal case study due to its integrated implementation of these elements. (Conclusions) Through a comprehensive examination of long tunnel visual environments using Convergent theories and empirical case studies, this research derived the following key implications. First, lighting (color temperature of 4,000–5,000K, illuminance of 50–100 lx, and dynamic patterns) was identified as the most critical factor in managing cognitive load and maintaining alertness, with color showing similar effects. Second, graphics demonstrated a moderate effect, and applying natural landscape imagery at specific points could contribute to fatigue relief and enhanced stability. Finally, a minimum lane width of 9 meters was determined to be an essential structural element for reinforcing psychological stability. This study suggests the need for future validation of the interactions between color temperature and color, as well as optimal design parameters, through driving simulations and virtual reality (VR) experiments.
