(Background and Purpose) This study empirically investigates the influence of digital public design elements applied to major coastal spaces of Busan—Haeundae, Gwangalli, and Dadaepo—on citizens’ place attachment. In recent years, public design in urban environments has evolved beyond simple sculptures or signage systems, incorporating digital technologies such as lighting, media façades, drone shows, and interactive information systems to expand citizens’ emotional experiences.Within this trend, Busan’s marine landscape functions as a major stage for urban branding and identity formation, yet there remains a lack of empirical research on how digital public design affects citizens’ emotional bonds and place attachment. Accordingly, this study analyzes how the core components of digital public design—visual appeal, informativeness, interactivity, and nightscape quality—influence citizens’ emotional attachment and place identity, thereby clarifying the public design value and strategic significance of digital marine landscapes in urban branding. (Method) The research selected Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach, and Dadaepo Beach, the representative waterfront spaces of Busan, as case sites, and conducted both on-site and online surveys. Out of 200 distributed questionnaires, 120 valid samples were analyzed. Independent variables included digital public design perception factors—visual attractiveness (DPD_V), informativeness (DPD_I), interactivity (DPD_C), and nightscape appeal (DPD_P)—while dependent variables represented the subcomponents of place attachment—place identity (PA_ID) and place dependence (PA_DEP). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, employing reliability testing (Cronbach’s α), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships among factors and the influence of key variables. Through these analyses, the study empirically identified the structural effects of digital public design elements on citizens’ place attachment and urban identity perception. (Results) The findings indicate that citizens showed high satisfaction with digital design features that deliver information clearly and provide visually impressive landscape experiences. Changes in lighting and color, participatory interactive experiences, and longer stays in the space were found to play important roles in enhancing emotional intimacy and awareness of urban identity. In particular, Gwangalli’s drone shows and coastal lighting, Haeundae’s media wall, and Dadaepo’s sunset fountain performance were identified as representative examples where citizens emotionally engage with a place and form a positive image of the city. (Conclusions) This study confirms that digital public design within Busan’s marine landscapes has a substantial effect on citizens’ emotional attachment and place identity formation. Visual lighting, information systems, and interactive experiences based on digital technology serve as key factors that connect citizens emotionally with urban spaces and foster a positive perception of the city. Therefore, digital public design should not be viewed merely as aesthetic decoration but as a core strategy for strengthening the emotional identity of a city.
