On Heidegger’s “Ge-Stell”: Science, Technology and Narrative Art

본 논문의 주도적 물음은 다음과 같다. 우리는 하이데거가 하나의 엄밀한 개념으로 개진한 게-슈텔에서 무엇을 읽어내야 하는가? 우리의 읽기가 어떻게 하면 과학기술의‘본질’에 관한 하이데거 사유의 명암을 규명하면서 기술의 발전과 불가분인 근대의 현실을 근원적으로 사유할 수 있는 터전을 마련할 수 있을까? 역사적 시대로서의 자본주의근대에서 자라난 서사예술은 과학기술의 성취를 수렴할 수 있을 정도로 진리와 해방의 지평을 담보하고 있는가? 본고의 논의는 위와 같은 물음에 대한 잠정적 응답으로서 다음과 같은 순서로 펼쳐진다. ① Ge-stell의 한국어 번역 불/가능성과 이 단어와 연관된 여러 쟁점을 거론할 것이다. Ge-stell의 영역(英譯)을 거론하는 것도 한역의 여러 면모를 살펴보는 작업의 연장선이다. ② 하이데거가 시도한 과학기술의 본질 규명이 어찌하여 현대기술문명의 사활이 걸린 절박한 쟁점인가를 ｢게-슈텔｣(Das Ge-Stell)과 ｢기술에 관한 물음｣(Die Frage nach der Technik)의 집중적인 독해로써 논구한다. ③ 두 글의 일정한 비교를 동반하는 이러한 논구를 바탕으로 결론으로서 횔덜린(Friedrich Hölderlin, 1770-1843)으로 대표되는 독일 시인들의 시작(詩作)에 대한 하이데거 사유의 현재적 의의와 한계를 짚는다. 동시에 찰스 디킨스(Charles Dickens, 1812-1870)를 예로 들어 Ge-stell의 작용이 관철되는 세계에서 근대의 탁월한 서사예술이야말로 진리와 자유의 해방적 빛을 품은 근원적 처소 가운데 하나임을 주장한다.

The leading questions of this paper are as follow. What are we to read from Ge‑stell, which Heidegger articulated as a single rigorous concept? How can our reading both illuminate Heidegger’s thinking on the “essence” of modern technology and lay at the same time the groundwork for a fundamental reflection on modern reality, which is inseparable from technological development? Does narrative art, which grew up within modernity as a historical epoch, secure a horizon of truth and emancipation sufficient to incorporate the achievements of science and technology? As a provisional response to these questions, the present discussion proceeds in the following order. It will address the (im)possibility of translating Ge‑stell into Korean and discuss various issues associated with the term. Referring to its English renderings is an extension of examining the many facets of its Korean translation. Through close readings of “Das Ge-Stell” (“Ge-stell”) and “Die Frage nach der Technik” (“The Question Concerning Technology”), it will argue why Heidegger’s attempt to determine the essence of science and technology is an urgent, life‑and‑death issue for contemporary technological civilization, which is obsessed with pursuing AI. On the basis of this argument, the conclusion will assess the present significance and limits of Heidegger’s thought on the poetry of German poets represented by Hölderlin. At the same time, it will contend that, in a world where the operation of Ge‑stell is carried through, the outstanding narrative art of modernity is precisely a primordial site that harbors the emancipatory light of truth and freedom.
