On the Humanistic Dimension of Marx's View of Civilization

Journal of Chinese Marxism studies Vol.3 No.2.png

Marx's concept of civilization centers on the “real individual,” revealing the logic of civilizational formation and development through historical materialism. Material production practices form the ontological foundation of civilization, while social relations network shape its form. Historical needs drive civilization's leap from subsistence to comprehensive freedom. Although capitalist civilization advances productive forces, its inherent contradictions lead to total human alienation: labor becomes a tool for capital exploitation, social relations materialize into commodity exchange, and capitalist application of technology exacerbates human partiality. Marx critically examines this “negative civilization” with principled rigor, emphasizing its fundamental opposition to human nature. He proposes the necessary path to transcend alienation: liberating free time through restructured individual ownership, establishing a “free association of individuals” to eliminate objectified relations, awakening human subjectivity through aesthetic liberation and ideological disenchantment, and ultimately achieving communist civilization. This form of civilization aims at human liberation, restoring labor to free creation, society to authentic bonds, and the spirit to conscious awakening.
