1950년대는 한국군에게 전력 증강을 통해 국방체계의 토대를 구축할 기회가 되었다. 미소 냉전으로 NSC-68에 따라 한반도를 대소(對蘇)봉쇄정책 추진을 위한 전진기지로서 전략적 가치를 재평가한 미국은 한국에 대규모 군사원조를 제공하였다. 정전협정 이후 체결된 「한미상호방위조약」과 「한미합의의사록」은 한국이 냉전의 전초기지로서 역할을 하게 하는 단초가 되었다. 미국은 동북아시아에서 소련의 세력 확장을 억제하고, 6·25전쟁에 참전했던 유엔군 철군에 따라 발생한 전력 공백을 대체할 수 있는 대안을 마련해야 했다. 이러한 배경에서 이루어진 미국의 한국에 대한 대규모 군사원조는 단기간에 한국군의 규모를 72만 명에 이르게 하였다. 또한, 지상·해상·공중에서 최신 무기를 도입할 기회를 제공하여 한국군이 한 단계 성장할 기회를 제공하였다. 한국군은 미국의 군사원조를 바탕으로 부대구조, 지휘체계를 재정비하고, 유엔군 철군에 따른 공백을 보완할 수 있는 역량을 구축하게 되었다. 미국의 봉쇄정책은 대규모 군사력 증강을 통해 소련의 확장을 억제하는 것을 기본 성격으로 하고 있었기 때문에 1950년대 후반기 미국의 재정적자가 심화하자 한국군에 대한 군사원조량은 축소되었고, 72만 명에 이르던 한국군은 감군을 통해 63만 명으로 축소되었다. 미국의 군사원조에 의한 한국군의 전력 증강은 오늘날 국방체계의 기틀 마련하였으며, 대북 억제력을 향상하는 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다. 그러나 지상군 중심의 전력 증강은 육·해·공군 균형발전을 가로막는 시발점이 되었으며, 한국군이 미군에 지나치게 의존하는 결과를 초래하였다.

Through the expansion of power, the Korean military became an opportunity in the 1950s to lay the foundation for today's defense. The United States provided Korea with massive military assistance after reevaluating its strategic value as a forward base for promoting a policy of large-scale containment on the Korean Peninsula in accordance with NCS-68 due to the Cold War. The United States had to come up with an alternative to curb the expansion of the Soviet Union's power in Northeast Asia and replace the power vacuum created by the withdrawal of UN forces participating in the Korean War. Against this backdrop, large-scale US military aid to Korea enabled the Korean military to rapidly expand to 720,000 soldiers in a short time, providing an opportunity for the Korean military to take it to the next level. The South Korean military enhancement through U.S. military aid in the 1950s laid the foundation for today's defense system and had a positive effect on improving deterrence against North Korea. However, the South Korean military's excessive dependence on the U.S. military was the starting point for the unbalanced development of the Army, Navy, and Air Forces, resulting in the South Korean military's reliance on the U.S. military.
