영남지역 철기문화의 도입과 초기 진⋅변한 사회

The Introduction of Iron Culture in the Yeongnam Region and Early Jin–Byeonhan Society

본 글은 영남지역 도입기 철기의 분석을 통해 그 형성 배경과 특징을 검토하고, 나아가 당시 사회의 성격을 유추하는 데 목적이 있다. 기존에는 영남지역 철기문화가 주로 기원전 108년 낙랑군 설치 이후 한(漢)의 선진적 철기문화가 유입된 결과라는 견해가 지배적이었다. 그러나 영남지역 도입기 철기는 단일 계통이나 경로가 아닌 전국계(戰國系) 철기문화와 진⋅한초(秦⋅漢初) 단조기술이 복합적으로 수용된 결과이며, 금강⋅만경강 및 북한강 유역 등 다양한 경로를 통해 유입되었다. 울산 교동리 1호묘의 선형 주조철부와 환두도는 진⋅한초(秦⋅漢初) 전개된 철기문화 변동과정과 궤를 같이하며, 경산 임당동 FⅡ-34호묘의 이조돌대 주조철부, 철착, 소형철판은 금강⋅만경강 유역 초기철기문화와 긴밀한 관련성을 드러낸다. 또한 장방형 주조철부, 주조철서, 철과는 전국계 철기문화의 전통을 계승한 것이다. 아울러 이들은 진⋅한초(秦⋅漢初) 단조기술의 영향으로 발생한 철단검, 철모, 철부, 철착, 철겸 등 단조철기와 함께 북한강을 통해 유입된 것으로 추정된다. 즉, 영남지역 철기문화의 형성 배경은 단일한 경로나 특정 정치 세력에 의한 직접적 전파의 결과가 아니라, 다원적 구조 속에서 형성된 것으로 이해된다. 또한 지역별 철기의 형식, 기종구성, 부장양상 등에서 확인되는 비정형성은 당시 철기 도입이 일원화된 체계 속에서 이루어진 것이 아니라, 영남의 각 지역 집단이 서로 다른 외부 세력과 개별적으로 연결되며 비교적 자율적으로 철기를 수용한 결과로 해석된다. 이는 철기를 매개로 한 상호작용이 지역사회 내에서 아직 제도화⋅구조화하지 않은 단계였으며, 당시 진⋅변한(辰⋅弁韓) 연맹체가 보다 느슨한 구조였음을 시사한다. 즉, 영남지역 도입기 철기문화의 다원성은 지역 간 네트워크가 고도로 집중⋅통합되기 이전, 초기적 상호작용의 양상이 반영된 결과라 할 수 있다.

This study aims to examine the characteristics and formative background of the introductory phase of iron culture in the Yeongnam region and, further, to infer the nature of contemporary society. Traditionally, the dominant view has been that Yeongnam’s iron culture resulted from the transplantation of advanced Han iron culture following the establishment of the Lelang Commandery in 108 BCE. However, the introductory iron culture of Yeongnam was not transmitted through a single lineage or route, but rather emerged from the complex reception of both Warring States–style iron culture and Qin–Han forging techniques, introduced via multiple routes such as the Geumgang–Mangyeonggang and Bukhang River basins. Thus, the formation of Yeongnam’s iron culture should be understood not as the result of a single channel or direct transplantation by a particular political power, but as a process shaped within a pluralistic structure. Furthermore, the unstandardized nature of iron forms, assemblages, and burial practices across regions suggests that local groups adopted iron independently, reflecting the relatively loose structure of the Jin and Byeonhan confederacies.
