The new terminology and analogy

본고는 단어 형성 기제인 유추에 주목하여 전문 용어 신어의 형성을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 전문 용어의 형성법에만 주목하거나 분야를 한정하여 그 형성을 살펴 본 기존 논의들과 달리 전문 분야를 한정 짓지 않고 전문 용어의 신어의 형성 양상 을 살펴보았다. 전문 용어는 전문적인 개념을 표현하기 위한 것이므로 새로운 단어 를 형성할 때 그에 대한 개념화를 새로이 하고 새로운 형식을 취할 것으로 기대된 다. 그러나 기존 단어와 유사한 형식을 가지는 단어가 적지 않으며 혼성과 축약에 의해 빈번히 형성된다. 개념적 투명성이 중요한 전문 용어에서 혼성어가 상대적으 로 높은 비율을 차지하는 현상은 결합형에 의한 유추적 형성으로 설명이 가능하다. 이러한 측면에서 전문 용어 신어의 형성 기제로서 유추가 우위성을 가진다고 할 수 있다. 전문 용어 신어의 경우 구 구성의 용어들이 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는데 이 들의 경우 단어와 단어가 나열되어 있는 구성이므로 개념을 명명하기 위해 필요한 단어들을 결합한 것이라고 해석할 여지가 있으므로 결합이 아닌 대치라는 조작이 이루어진 것임을 맥락 정보를 통해 확인하였다. 또한 구 구성의 전문 용어 신어가 유추의 틀에 의해 형성된 경우 단어 외부의 요소까지 고정요소가 될 수 있으며 이는 전문 용어 신어에서만 나타나는 특징이다. 본고는 전문 용어 신어의 형성 또한 유추 로 설명할 수 있으며 더 나아가 유추가 전문 용어 신어의 형성에서 유효한 단어 형 성 기제로 작용함을 시사한다.

This paper aims to examine the formation of new terminology through the word-formation mechanism of analogy. Unlike previous studies that primarily focused on the word-formation methods of terminology, this paper examines a wide range of new terminology without restricting the analysis to a specialized field. Terminology are intended to express specialized concepts within particular domains; therefore, it is expected that newly created word would involve new conceptualizations and adopt novel forms. However, as observed in many new word, a considerable number of newly coined terminology exhibit forms that closely resemble existing words. Furthermore, similar to general term, new terminology are often formed through blending and abbreviation. The relatively high proportion of blends in terminology—despite the importance of conceptual transparency— can be explained by analogy via combining form, a specific type of analogy. Taken together, these findings suggest that the formation of terminology can also be effectively accounted for by analogy, and more broadly, that analogy serves as a productive and meaningful mechanism in the formation of terminology.
