평생교육 연구의 참여적 패러다임 전환: 포토보이스(Photovoice) 연구 방법론과 참여기반 실천의 이론화

Photovoice as Methodology: Advancing Participatory Paradigms in Lifelong Education

본 연구는 포토보이스(Photovoice)를 평생교육 연구에서 단순한 시각자료 수집 기법을 넘어, 참여·해석·실천·사회적 환원을 통합하는 비판적 연구 방법론으로 재개념화하고, 그 인식론적 토대와 실천적 함의를 체계적으로 해명하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 포토보이스의 인식론적 기반을 비판적 교육철학과 참여적 시각 실천 전통의 교차적 관점에서 재구성하고, Wang, Hergenrather, Latz의 핵심 절차 모형을 비교·종합하여 참여기반 시각 연구의 구조 논리와 설계 원리를 이론화하였다. 또한 사회적 주변성과 생애주기 다양성을 포괄하는 다섯 건의 사례를 분석 준거에 따라 재구성하여, 포토보이스가 학습, 주체성, 공론, 정책을 연결하는 맥락적 양상을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 포토보이스는 참여자의 시각적 해석을 지식 생산의 출발점으로 삼아 연구 권력의 탈중심화를 구현하고, 다층적 해석과정을 통해 질적 연구의 해석적 타당성과 사회적 정당성을 강화하며, 개인의 경험을 공적 문제로 전환하는 시민적 학습 경로를 형성하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 포토보이스는 생애주기와 사회적 위치에 따라 주체성 형성과 정책 접속성이 상이하게 발현되는 과정을 드러내며, 평생교육을 경험기반의 비판적 시민성 학습체계로 확장할 수 있는 방법론적 지평을 제시한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 포토보이스를 참여기반 지식 생산과 사회적 실천을 통합하는 핵심 연구 방법론으로 확장하며, 평생교육 연구의 인식론적·방법론적 지평을 넓히기 위한 이론적 토대를 제안한다.

This study reconceptualizes photovoice as a critical research methodology in lifelong education, moving beyond its conventional use as a visual data collection technique to integrate participation, interpretation, practice, and social transformation. To do so, it reconstructs its epistemic grounding through the intersection of critical pedagogy and participatory visual traditions and synthesizes procedural models proposed by Wang, Hergenrather, and Latz to articulate design principles for participatory visual research. In addition, five cases spanning different life stages and forms of social marginality are reanalyzed using shared analytical criteria to examine how photovoice connects learning, subjectivity, public discourse, and policy. Findings show that photovoice decentralizes research authority, strengthens interpretive validity and social legitimacy through multi-layered processes of image, narrative, collective dialogue, and public engagement, and fosters civic learning pathways that transform personal experience into public issues, while demonstrating how subject formation and policy access vary across life stages and social positions and its potential to extend lifelong education toward an experience-based model of critical citizenship learning. In conclusion, this study advances photovoice as a core methodological approach integrating participatory knowledge production and social practice, providing a theoretical foundation for lifelong education research.
