본 연구는 퀴어 독해를 위한 전략이자 태도로서의 바이섹슈얼하게 보기를 제안한다. 시선과 응시의 정치성을 다룬 기존 논의들은 보는 행위에 뒤얽힌 힘의 경합과 메커니즘을 해명하는 데 일정한 기여를 했으나, 억압의 주체와 대상을 비가역적으로 고정하는 한계가 있었다. 퀴어한/퀴어의 보기에 관한 논의들 역시 욕망의 구체적 결을 포착하는 데에는 일정한 공백을 남겼다. 이에 본 연구는 ‘바이섹슈얼(리티)은 무엇을 할 수 있는가’를 물으면서, 바이섹슈얼리티를 지식 생산 체계와 지배적 질서에 이의를 제기하는 비판적 틀로 사유하는 바이섹슈얼 인식론을 보기의 정치학 안으로 도입하였다. 영화 <프릭스>(1932)의 조세핀-조셉을 원형으로 삼아 바이섹슈얼하게 보기를 문턱/울타리 위에서 수행되는 보기 실천으로 개념화하고, 기존에 논의된 바이섹슈얼 인식론을 토대로 구체적 실천 전략을 도출하였다. 경계의 작위성을 심문하는 비판적 작업, 이면의 잠재태를 복원하는 고고학적 작업, 모순을 해소하지 않고 나란히 두는 윤리적 태도가 그것이다. 닫힌 텍스트를 열어내는 비평적 방법론으로서의 바이섹슈얼하게 보기는 보기의 정치학, 바이섹슈얼 정치, 퀴어 이론 및 정치에 유의미한 함의를 제공한다.
This study proposes bisexually watching as a strategy and attitude for queer reading. While existing discussions on the politics of looking have contributed to elucidating the power struggles and mechanisms entangled in the act of looking, they have tended to fix the subjects and objects of oppression in irreversible ways. Discussions of queer modes of looking, too, have left certain gaps in capturing the concrete textures of desire. In response, this study asks what bisexuality can do, and introduces bisexual epistemology into the politics of looking as a critical framework that challenges dominant systems of knowledge production and existing orders. Taking Josephine–Joseph in Freaks (1932) as a prototype, bisexually watching is conceptualized as a practice of watching performed on the threshold or fence. Drawing on existing theories of bisexual epistemology, this study derives three concrete strategies of practice: a critical interrogation of the constructed nature of boundaries; an archaeological work that restores latent potentials obscured beneath the surface of narrative; and an ethical stance of placing contradictions side by side without resolving them. As a critical methodology that opens up closed texts, bisexually watching offers significant implications for the politics of looking, bisexual politics, and queer theory and politics.
