본 연구는 언어, 이데올로기, 접합에 대한 스튜어트 홀(Stuart Hall)의 이론을 토대로 서구 사회에서 부상한 ‘워크(woke)’ 담론의 형성과 적대적 재전유 과정을 고찰한다. 이를 통해 언어가 정치적 실천이자 헤게모니 투쟁의 장으로 작동하는 방식을 규명한다. 본래 해방의 기표였던 워크가 지배 담론에 의해 일탈로 재구성되는 과정은, 진보의 언어가 쉽게 조롱과 혐오의 대상으로 전락하는 한국 사회의 담론 구조를 해석하는 데에도 유의미한 분석적 준거를 제공한다. 본 연구는 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 현대 진보 정치가 직면한 의미 구성의 위기를 진단하고, 정체성 정치와 헤게모니 정치의 관계를 재사유함으로써 워크 이후 진보 정치의 이론적 방향성과 실천 가능성을 비판적으로 모색한다.
This article analyzes the formation, circulation, and antagonistic reappropriation of the discourse of “wokeness” in Western societies through the theoretical framework of Stuart Hall’s work on language, representation, and articulation. It examines how language operates not merely as a medium of expression but as a dynamic terrain of political practice and hegemonic struggle. The transformation of woke from a signifier of emancipatory awareness into a stigmatized marker of deviance reveals the vulnerability of progressive language to symbolic inversion and hostile resignification. This process offers a critical lens for interpreting similar discursive dynamics in South Korea, where progressive vocabularies are easily displaced into objects of mockery before gaining political legitimacy. Building on this analysis, the article diagnoses the contemporary crisis of progressive politics as a crisis of meaning-making, and reconsiders the relationship between identity politics and hegemonic politics. Ultimately, it seeks to reimagine the theoretical orientation and political possibilities of the Left in the post-woke moment, thereby constructing a more inclusive and strategic political project.
