A Study on Korean Language Learners’ Experiences and Perceptions of Using Generative AI: A Survey of 112 Learners in Domestic and Overseas Learning Contexts

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean language learners’ experiences and perceptions of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) in learning Korean. An online survey was conducted with 112 university-level learners studying in Korea and abroad. The questionnaire examined learners’ usage patterns, perceived usefulness, self-efficacy, reliability, ethical awareness, perceived suitability, and learning concerns related to generative AI. The results indicate that learners frequently use generative AI, particularly for vocabulary, grammar, and writing, and generally perceive it as a useful learning tool. However, learners also expressed cautious trust in AI-generated information and strong awareness of potential inaccuracies. These perceptions suggest that the educational effectiveness of generative AI may vary depending on learners’ usage strategies and critical judgment. Ethical concerns such as plagiarism, privacy, and overreliance were commonly reported. Qualitative responses further revealed both learning benefits and risks, often accompanied by critical and conditional use strategies. These findings highlight the need for level- and skill-sensitive instructional guidance, AI literacy education, and clear ethical guidelines to support the effective and responsible integration of generative AI in Korean language education.
