본 논문은 칼 폴라니(Karl Polanyi)의 경제학 방법론을 체계적으로 분석하고 현대경제학과 사회과학에 주는 함의를 탐구한다. 폴라니는 『거대한 전환(The Great Transformation)』을 통해 시장경제의 특수성과 사회적 맥락을 강조하며 경제학의 방법론적 토대에 근본적 질문을 제기했다. 그의 방법론적 기여는 크게 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 수단-목적관계의 합리적 선택을 강조하는 “형식적” 경제학과 인간과 환경사이의 제도화된 상호작용에 초점을 맞추는 ‘실질적’ 경제학의 구분이다. 둘째, 경제가 사회적 관계에 ‘착근(embedded)’되어 있다는 개념이다. 셋째, 호혜성, 재분배, 교환이라는 경제통합의 세 가지 기본형태를 통한 비교분석 틀이다. 폴라니는 주류경제학의 방법론적 개인주의, 경제적 동기의 단일화, 역사적 특수성의 무시 등을 비판하며, 경제현상을 더 넓은 사회적·역사적·문화적 맥락에서 이해할 것을 주장했다. 그의 ‘허구적 상품(fictitious commodities)’개념과 ‘이중 운동’이론은 시장 확장과 사회적 보호사이의 긴장관계를 설명한다. 본 논문은 폴라니 방법론의 현대적 적용가능성과 한계를 논의하면서, 그의 통찰이 경제현상의 복잡성과 다양성을 인식하고 경제학을 더 넓은 사회과학적 맥락에 위치시키는 데 기여를 한다고 결론짓는다.

This paper examines Karl Polanyi’s economic methodology and its implications for contemporary economics and the social sciences. In “The Great Transformation”, Polanyi underscored the historical specificity of the market economy and its social embeddedness, thereby challenging the methodological premises of mainstream economics. His contribution is organized around three dimensions: (1) the distinction between “formal” economics, centered on rational choice, and “substantive” economics, focused on institutionalized interactions between humans and their environment; (2) the view that the economy is embedded in social relations; and (3) a comparative framework of economic integration—reciprocity, redistribution, and exchange. The paper also revisits his concepts of “fictitious commodities” and “double movement” to analyze tensions between market expansion and social protection, and concludes by evaluating the contemporary relevance and limits of Polanyi’s methodology for re-situating economics within a broader social-scientific perspective.
