웹툰과 미술 장(場)의 융합과 경계 해체 : 기안84 사례를 중심으로

The Convergence and the Dissolution of Boundaries of Webtoon Field and the Art World : Focusing on the Case of Kian84

본 연구는 기안84 사례를 중심으로 디지털 미디어 환경에서 웹툰과 순수미술 장(場) 간 융합과 경계 해체가 일어나는 원인과 현상을 분석하였다. 분석의 이론적 틀로는 피에르 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 장이론을 적용하였다. 연구방법으로는 내용분석과 심층 인터뷰를 병행하였으며, 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 디지털 플랫폼의 확산은 미술계의 배타적 게이트 키핑 권한을 분산시켰다. 이는 장르 간 경계의 유동성을 가속화하는 요인으로 작용하였다. 기안84는 이러한 환경에서 웹툰과 방송을 통해 서사자본을 축적하고 이를 기반으로 대중에게 예술가적 페르소나(부캐)를 확립하며 문화적 정당성을 획득했다. 둘째, 미술 장 진입 이후 제도적 권위와 플랫폼 자본 간의 충돌로 인해 이중적 평가 양상이 드러났다. 대중은 전시를 웹툰 서사의 물리적 체험이자 놀이로 수용하며 능동적으로 개입하였다. 반면 미술계는 이를 단기적 상업 기획으로 규정하고 미학적 깊이에 대해 회의적인 시각을 드러냈다. 셋째, 기안84는 형식 실험을 지속하고 큐레이터와의 협업을 통해 도록과 비평 등 공식 아카이브를 축적하고, 이를 통해 대중적 인기를 제도화된 자본으로 전환하는 전략을 구사하였다. 그러나 이러한 성공 모델은 독보적인 대중적 인지도를 전제로 한다는 한계를 지니며, 후발 웹툰 작가들에게는 오히려 진입 장벽을 높이는 배제의 기제로 작동할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

This study explores how the boundaries between webtoons and fine arts are blurring in the digital age, focusing on the case of Kian84. Using Pierre Bourdieu's field theory, data was gathered through content analysis and in-depth interviews. The findings are as follows: First, digital platforms have weakened the traditional art world's strict control, allowing different genres to mix more easily. Through webtoons and TV appearances, Kian84 built a strong personal brand. He used this background to create an artistic identity and gain public acceptance. Second, his entry into the fine arts led to divided opinions. The general public enthusiastically welcomed his exhibitions as a fun, real-world extension of his webtoons. On the other hand, traditional art critics viewed his work as a short-term commercial project and questioned its artistic depth. Third, Kian84 worked with curators to create official records, such as exhibition catalogs and art reviews. This was a strategy to turn his massive popularity into recognized artistic status. However, this success model relies heavily on exceptional public fame. Therefore, this study concludes that his case might paradoxically raise the barrier to entry, making it harder for other webtoon artists to transition into the fine arts.
