‘부활’한 다큐멘터리<부활하는 산하(연세대 총학생회&연세영화패, 1986)>: 기획, 제작, 상영 과정의 복원

한국 영화사에서 ‘<파랑새> 사건’의 계기로만 알려져 온 다큐멘터리 <부활하는 산하(연세대 총학생회&연세영화패, 1986)>가 다시 관객을 만나게 되었다. 2024년 이정하·이수정 부부의 자택에서 8밀리 필름이 우연히 발견되고 2025년 11월 서울독립영화제를 통해 복원·상영되면서, 그 기획과 제작, 상영에 관한 내용도 40년 만에 영화와 함께 ‘부활’하고 있다. 연세대 총학생회가 기획하고 연세영화패와 함께 제작한 <부활하는 산하>는 1986년 ‘고연제(高延祭)’의 상영 직후부터 당국의 추적 대상이 되었고, 영화에 직·간접적으로 관여한 이들은 세심한 주의와 보안 속에서 비밀에 부쳐졌다. 본 논문에서는 2025년 12월부터 2026년 3월까지 당시 제작 관계자들을 인터뷰하고 각종 자료를 수집하여, 문서화된 기록이 거의 없는 <부활하는 산하>의 기획, 제작 및 상영의 맥락을 복원한다. 우선 <부활하는 산하>는 최소한 네 개의 8밀리 필름 버전과 한 개의 VHS 버전이 있(었)다. 이는 제한된 시공간적 조건 내에서 제작과 상영을 해야 했으며, 1987년 이한열의 장례식 이후라는 새로운 국면을 반영한 재편집이 이루어졌기 때문이다. 또 이 영화의 특별함은 현재와 같은 분업 시스템과는 상이한, 은밀한 집단창작 방식으로 제작되었다는 것이다. 이런 성격은 1986년 첫 상영, ‘<파랑새> 사건’의 계기가 된 고려대 상영, 1987년 이후 대학가에서 비밀리에 이루어진 대여 상영에 이르기까지 영화의 편집과 유통, 상영까지를 아우른다. <부활하는 산하>는 1986년 당시 확산되고 있던 ‘반미(反美)의식’의 정치화, 대중화 과정의 일환으로, 학생운동과 대학영화의 학술-문화운동의 역량이 결집된 다큐멘터리라고 할 수 있다. 한국 영화운동사의 주요한 변곡점이었던 이 영화가 ‘부활’해 우리 앞에 나타난 현재, 그 기획과 제작, 상영을 둘러싼 이야기를 복원 서술하고, 당시의 제작 참여자들이 2026년의 기억 주체로서 여기에 호응하고 개입하며 만들어 내는 역동성을 함께 기록하는 것은, <부활하는 산하>를 다루는 연구의 주요한 초석이 될 것이다.

Buhwalhaneun Sanha (The Resurrected Nation, 1986) re-emerged in 2024 following the serendipitous discovery of an 8mm print. This study reconstructs the film’s obscured trajectory—encompassing its clandestine planning, production, and exhibition—by leveraging oral histories and archival recovery conducted between December 2025 and March 2026. Conceived by the Yonsei University Student Council and realized by the Yonsei Film Circle, the project was immediately subjected to rigorous state surveillance. Consequently, the intricacies of its creation remained largely untold and unrecorded for four decades, as those involved prioritized discretion and eventually moved on from the movement. As a seminal text, the film represents a crucial synthesis of the “academic-cultural movement” and the nascent university cinema movement, significantly contributing to the politicization of “anti-Americanism” during the 1980s. By restoring this forgotten context, this research establishes a vital historiographical foundation for analyzing this “resurrected” artifact.
