무엇이 기독교대학을 탁월성있게 하는가?: A 대학교 사례를 중심으로

What makes a Christian university excellent? : Focusing on a case of A university

연구 목적 : 이 연구는 오늘날 한국의 기독교대학이 직면한 다층적 위기 중 특히 종교교육 활동에 대한 각종 제재에 따른 건학이념 및 정체성 구현의 위기 앞에서 ‘기독교적 탁월성’ 추구를 중심으로 기독교대학의 정체성을 새롭게 할 필요성이 있다고 보고, 국내 한 기독교대학인 A대학교의 교육 사례를 통하여 기독교대학이 추구해야 할 기독교적 탁월성의 의미와 그 특징 및 핵심 요소를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구 방법 및 결과: 이를 위해 국내에 설립된지 약 30여 년 된 기독교 종합대학교로서 A대학교(가명)를 단일사례로 선정하고, 2024년 7월부터 2025년 1월까지 수행된 교수 및 졸업생 대상의 면담분석을 중심으로 한 사례연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 기독교대학으로서 A대학교가 교수와 졸업생들을 이끈 힘은 신앙과 학문이 통합된 교육에 대한 가능성과 그 소명의식에서 비롯된 비전이 주는 학교의 감화력에 있었다. 둘째, 기독교대학으로서 A대학교에서 학생 성장을 돕는 것으로 인식된 주요 교육활동으로는 융합 전공교육을 통한 맞춤형 학습, 현장중심의 참여학습, 팀제도를 통한 공동체 학습, 지성과 영성이 통합된 기독교세계관 학습으로 나타났다. 셋째, 교수와 졸업생들은 기독교 신앙을 기반으로 한 삶의 비전과 동기부여, 진심을 쏟는 교수와 학생 간 인격적 관계, ‘A인다움’이라는 공유된 정체성 형성, 자유로운 선택과 책임 존중, 인성교육의 제도화 및 문화화를 A대학교의 교육적 강점으로 인식했다. 결론 및 제언 : A대학교 사례를 통하여 기독교대학의 탁월성 요소로 총 7가지 힘, 존재의 힘, 비전의 힘, 관계의 힘, 공동의 힘, 참여의 힘, 제도의 힘, 문화의 힘을 도출하였으며, 이를 토대로 기독교대학의 정체성 확립을 위한 기독교교육적 과제를 제안하였다.

Purpose of the Study: This qualitative case study examines how a Christian university in Korea can renew its institutional identity through the pursuit of “Christian excellence” amid increasing constraints on religious education and pressures on founding ideals. The study explores the meaning and distinctive features of Christian excellence in Christian higher education through the case of A University(pseudonym). Research Methods: Based on in-depth interviews with faculty members and alumni conducted between July 2024 and January 2025, this analysis explores how participants experienced and interpreted the university’s formative influence. The findings are as follows. First, the driving force shaping faculty and graduates was the university’s vision grounded in a sense of calling and integration of faith and scholarship. Seconds, key educational practices included interdisciplinary and customized major programs, field-oriented participatory learning, community-based learning through a team system, and Christian worldview education integrating intellectual and spiritual formation. Third, participants identified the university’s educational strengths as a faith-based life vision and motivation, person-centered faculty-strudent relationships, the formation of a shared identity(“A-ness”), respect for freedom and responsibility, and the institutionalization and cultural embedding of character education. Conclusions and Recommendations: From the case of A University, seven elements of Christian excellence were derived: the power of being (existence), vision, relationships, community, participation, institutions, and culture.
