The Relationship Between Reason and Faith Based on Grace: The Ideas of St. Thomas Aquinas

본 연구는 2027년 대한민국에서 개최되는 세계청년대회(WYD)를 계기로 제기되는 ‘신앙의 지속성’ 문제를 철학적으로 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. WYD는 전 세계 가톨릭 청년들이 신앙과 공동체적 연대를 체험하는 대표적 국제 행사이지만, 대회 이후 일상으로 복귀하는 과정에서 신앙의 열정이 약화하는 현상이 반복적으로 나타난다. 본 연구는 이러한 경험을 단순한 심리적 기복이 아니라 신앙의 본질과 구조에 관한 물음으로 확장하여, 그 해명을 ‘은총’의 개념 안에서 모색한다. 연구는 ‘토마스 아퀴나스’의 신앙 이해를 중심으로, 그의 대표 저작인 『신학대전』을 분석하는 방식으로 전개된다. 먼저 신앙의 원인으로서의 신적 계시와 인간의 동의를 고찰하고, 이어 ‘형성된 신앙’과 ‘형성되지 않은 신앙’의 구분을 통해 신앙의 불완전성 문제를 다룬다. 또한 은총과 항구함의 관계를 분석함으로써, 인간의 자유의지만으로는 선을 지속적으로 견지할 수 없으며 은총의 보존적 작용이 필요함을 밝힌다. 나아가 은총이 인간 지성의 자율성을 침해하지 않고 오히려 이를 고양하여 초자연적 진리를 인식하도록 돕는다는 점을 논증한다. 결론적으로 신앙의 지속성은 감정적 열정이나 일회적 결단으로 유지되는 것이 아니라, 인간의 자유와 협력하는 은총의 지속적 작용 안에서 가능하다. 따라서 WYD 이후 경험되는 영적 냉담은 신앙의 부재라기보다, 은총에 대한 새로운 의존과 성숙을 요청하는 과정으로 이해될 수 있다. 본 연구는 신앙의 불완전성을 제거해야 할 결핍이 아니라, 은총 안에서 완성되어 가는 여정으로 재해석함으로써 현대 교회와 청년 사목에 철학적 통찰을 제공하고자 한다.

This study aims to philosophically examine the question of ‘sustainment of faith’ raised by the 2027 World Youth Day Seoul (WYD). WYD is an important international event where Catholic youths from around the world gather to experience faith and communal solidarity; however, their religious fervor is weakened as they return to their daily life after the event. This study tries to understand this experience, beyond a simple psychological ups and downs, to questions about the nature and structure of faith, seeking an explanation with the concept of ‘grace.’ Focusing on Thomas Aquinas’ understanding of faith, this study analyzes his magnum opus, <Summa Theologica>. It first examines divine revelation and human consent as the beginning of faith, and then addresses the question of imperfect faith by distinguishing ‘formed faith’ and ‘unformed faith.’ Furthermore, by analyzing the relationship between grace and permanence, it demonstrates that human free will alone cannot sustain the good and that the preserving action of grace is necessary. Furthermore, it argues that grace does not infringe upon the autonomy of the human intellect, but rather elevates it, helping us to recognize supernatural truth. In conclusion, the sustainment of faith is not realized by human passion or a one-time decision, but rather through the ongoing work of grace in cooperation with our freedom. Therefore, the spiritual apathy experienced after WYD can be understood not as an absence of faith, but as a process demanding renewed reliance and maturity in grace. This study seeks to offer philosophical insights to the Church and youth ministry by reinterpreting the imperfect faith not as a lack to be judged, but as a journey to be perfected in grace.
