Reading American Popular Culture through K-Pop Demon Hunters: Focusing on Cultural Literacy

This article examines the Netflix animation K-Pop Demon Hunters as a key text for exploring cultural literacy in the context of contemporary American society, popular culture and English literature education. This essay particularly situates the film within the hostile socio-political climate in the United States after the Trump administration. By doing so, it interprets K-Pop Demon Hunters as a form of cultural appeal responding to social conditions of exclusion and discrimination. Drawing on the theoretical concepts of cultural literacy and culturality, this essay explores how hybrid Koreanness represented in the film is consumed, understood, and embraced by U.S. audiences as an alternative cultural resource of solidarity and healing. It further presents a case study of a Korean undergraduate course, showing how group projects enhance a close analysis of the film as a text within Korean-American intercultural contexts and cultivate a critical form of cultural literacy.
