Structural Changes in Source Story Selection in the Korean Drama Industry

본 연구는 최근 한국 드라마 산업에서 나타나는 원천 스토리 선택 구조의 변화를 분석하고, 웹툰 IP의 부상이 어떠한 산업적 의미를 갖는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 2015년부터 2023년까지 제작⋅공개된 한국 드라마 중외부 원작이 확인되는 작품 318편을 대상으로 원작 스토리 유형과 플랫폼별 제작 구조를 분석하였다. 분석은 원작 유형분포, 연도별 변화, 플랫폼별 비교, 교차분석의 네 단계로 수행되었다. 분석 결과 웹툰⋅웹소설 원작 드라마는 전체의 42.1%로 가장 높은 비중을 차지했으며, 특히 2018년 이후 급격한 증가세를 보이며 주요 원천 스토리로 자리 잡은 것으로 나타났다. 플랫폼별 비교 결과, OTT 플랫폼에서 웹툰 원작 드라마 비중이 가장 높았고, 플랫폼 유형과 원작 스토리 선택 간에는 통계적으로 유의미한 관계가 확인되었다(χ² = 31.84, p < .001). 이러한 결과는 웹툰 IP의 확산이 단순한 콘텐츠 트렌드 변화가 아니라 플랫폼 중심 미디어 환경 속에서 드라마 산업의 원천 스토리 선택 구조가 재편된 결과임을 보여준다. 특히 OTT 플랫폼의 글로벌 유통 구조와 콘텐츠 확장 전략은 웹툰 IP와 높은 정합성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 한국 드라마 산업에서 나타나는 원작 스토리 유형 변화를 장기 시계열 분석과 플랫폼 비교를 통해 실증적으로 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 또한 웹툰 IP 기반 콘텐츠 확장의 산업적 의미를 플랫폼 전환과 연결하여 설명함으로써 문화산업 연구와 미디어 산업 연구에 새로운 시사점을 제공한다.

This study examines structural changes in source story selection in the Korean drama industry and explores the industrial significance of the increasing adaptation of webtoon-based intellectual property (IP). In recent years, webtoons have emerged as a major source material for television dramas, particularly within the rapidly evolving platform-driven media environment. To investigate this phenomenon, this study analyzes 318 Korean drama productions released between 2014 and 2023 that are based on identifiable source materials. The analysis focuses on four dimensions: the distribution of source story types, temporal trends, platform-based differences, and cross-tabulation analysis. The findings show that webtoon and web novel adaptations account for the largest proportion of source materials(42.1%) among Korean dramas. In particular, the number of webtoon-based dramas increased rapidly after 2018, indicating a structural shift in source story selection within the industry. Platform comparison further reveals that OTT platforms exhibit the highest proportion of webtoon-based adaptations, suggesting a strong compatibility between webtoon IP and OTT content strategies. Cross-tabulation analysis confirms a statistically significant relationship between platform type and source story selection (χ² = 31.84, p < .001). These findings suggest that the expansion of webtoon IP is not merely a temporary content trend but reflects a broader structural transformation in the Korean drama industry under a platform-driven media environment. In particular, the global distribution structure and franchise-oriented production strategies of OTT platforms appear to align closely with the narrative characteristics and scalability of webtoon-based storytelling. By providing empirical evidence of long-term changes in source story selection and platform dynamics, this study contributes to media industry research by explaining the rise of webtoon IP in relation to platform transition in the Korean drama industry.
