연등회 외국인 참가자의 체험에 관한 현상학 연구

A Phenomenological Study on the Experiences of Foreign Participants in the Yeondeunghoe(Lotus Lantern Festival)

이 연구는 연등회에 참가한 외국인 체험을 Colaizzi (1978)의 기술적 현상학 절차를 통해 탐구하였다. 연구의 목적은 외국인들의 회고적 진술을 분석하여 체험의 본질 구조를 기술하는 데 있다. 2024년 ‘연등회 프렌즈’ 프로그램에 참가한 외국인 10명을 대상으로, 축제 종료 약 10개월 후 일대일 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 분석은 의미 단위 도출, 주제묶음 통합, 총체적 기술의 단계로 이루어졌다. 그 결과 ‘정서적 해방과 심리 회복 체험’, ‘자율성과 주체성 회복 체험’, ‘내면의 평화와 영성적 체험’, ‘문화적 경계 허물기와 수용 체험’, ‘문화적 소속감과 정서적 교감 체험’, ‘공동체적 수용과 감정의 공유 체험’의 여섯 개의 중심 대주제와 열두 개의 하위 주제가 도출되었다. 이러한 체험의 본질 구조는 대조와 통합의 과정을 거치며 참가자 경험의 지향성에 따라 개인적⋅문화적⋅공동체적 차원이 서로 교차하고 상호 영향을 주는 관계적 체험구조로 드러났다. 학술적으로 이 연구는 연등회 체험의 내면적 의미를 기술한 현상학 연구로서, 기존의 양적 결과 중심의 연구와 구별되며, 회고적 진술을 통해 축제 체험의 장기적 의미와 지속성을 조명하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 실무적으로는 다양한 문화적 배경을 지닌 외국인 참가자들이 정서적 몰입과 소속감을 경험할 수 있도록 자율적 참여구조와 포용적 프로그램을 설계할 필요성을 시사한다. 이러한 접근은 다문화 사회로 이행하는 도시에서, 축제가 문화통합과 관광 자원의 매개체로 기능할 수 있음을 보여준다. 또한 이 연구는 외국인의 문화⋅축제 체험을 참가자의 목소리로 기술함으로써, 기술적 현상학이 경험의 본질을 도출하는 데 유효한 방법론적 접근임을 보여준다.

Grounded in Colaizzi’s(1978) descriptive phenomenological method, this study explored the lived experiences of foreign participants in the Yeondeunghoe(Lantern Lighting Festival). The purpose was to describe the essential structure of their experiences through retrospective interviews. Ten foreigners who participated in the 2024 “Yeondeunghoe Friends” program were interviewed approximately ten months after the festival. Data analysis involved extracting meaning units, clustering themes, and developing an exhaustive description. Six core themes and twelve subthemes were derived: (1) emotional release and psychological recovery; (2) restoration of autonomy and subjectivity; (3) inner peace and spiritual experience; (4) breaking and accepting cultural boundaries; (5) cultural belonging and emotional resonance; and (6) communal acceptance and sharing of emotions. This essential structure revealed a relational experience where personal, cultural, and communal dimensions intersect and influence one another. Academically, this study differs from previous quantitative research by focusing on the inner meaning and long-term significance of the festival experience. Practically, it highlights the need for inclusive and participatory programs. Furthermore, it suggests that festivals can serve as a medium for cultural integration and tourism resources in cities transitioning into multicultural societies. Overall, the study demonstrates that descriptive phenomenology is a valid approach for revealing the essence of cultural and festival experiences.
