본 연구는 조선 전기 영남지역에서 집중적으로 확인되는 연질백자의 형성 원인을 규명하고자 한다. 이를위하여 도석 원료 계열의 진해 두동리, 경산 사기리 가마터와 고령토 계열의 산청 방목리, 하동 백련리 가마터를 대상으로 가마 구조와 원료별 조성을 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 연질과 경질의 원인은 가마구조와 유약보다는 태토이며, 태토 특성은 도석과 고령토의 원료 차이에서 기인하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 도석 계열 원료는 고령토에 비하여 산화알루미늄(Al₂O₃)이 적고 융제가 많아 경질백자 제작에 유리한 반면에, 고령토 계열 원료는 그 반대의 조성을 가져 경질화에 제약을 가져와 연질백자 생성의 한 원인으로 작용한 것으로 보인다. 또한, 도석 계열 원료를 사용한 경우에는 낮은 번조 온도에 의하여 연질백자가 생산되며, 고령토 계열 원료를 사용한 경우에는 원료의 풍화도에 따른 조성비 차이가 연질백자 형성의 원인으로 추정해 볼 수 있다. 다만, 본 연구에서 제시한 원인은 현재 확보된 자료에 기반하였으며 이외에 다른 원인의 영향도 별도 검토가 필요하다.
This study aims to elucidate the causes of the formation of soft-paste porcelain, which is concentrated in the Yeongnam region during the early Joseon period. To this end, kiln structures and raw-material compositions were compared between the Dudong-ri kiln in Jinhae and the Sagiri kiln in Gyeongsan, based on pottery stone, and the Bangmok-ri kiln in Sancheong and the Baengnyeon-ri kiln in Hadong, based on kaolin. The results suggest that differences between soft- and hard-paste porcelain are not explained by kiln structure or glaze composition but are related to body composition and differences between pottery stone and kaolin raw materials. Compared with kaolin, pottery stone contains lower aluminum oxide(Al₂O₃) and higher flux contents, favoring the production of hard-paste porcelain. Kaolin, by contrast, shows the opposite compositional characteristics, which constrain vitrification and contribute to the formation of soft-paste porcelain. Furthermore, when pottery stone is used, firing temperature influences vitrification, whereas in kaolin-based bodies, differences in compositional ratios resulting from raw-material weathering are considered to influence the formation of soft-paste porcelain. However, the causes proposed in this study are based on currently available data, and the influence of additional factors cannot be excluded.
