This paper examines the transformation of archival images into electronic images and the historicity embedded in that process, centered on Harun Farocki's Interface (1995). Where previous studies have tended to read Farocki's work primarily through political critique and digital media strategy, this paper takes a different approach, arguing that the devices at work in Interface—abstraction, delay and repetition, technologies of representation, and the gesture of reenactment—are more fully understood through the soft montage as a condition specific to the electronic image in video. The paper begins by showing how Farocki draws his own earlier footage back into Interface through reenactment, redistributing it within the editing flow of video as a way of uncovering the material and historical conditions from which those images emerged. It then turns to the question of how images, once passed through video, take on a kind of automaticity they did not previously possess—an automaticity in which the abstraction carried within the image appears as a gap between its function and its use—and considers, through comparison with other films, how such images move beyond representation to work independently of human vision. The paper concludes by discussing how the accidental image, when brought back into the editing process and subjected to a retrospective tracing of its conditions, undergoes a shift in ontological status, becoming historical in its own right. Taken together, these readings suggest that the relationship between temporal reversibility and abstraction, as it unfolds through the electronic image in Farocki's work, opens onto the question of what images can do when placed between the human and the machine—and that this concern with tracking the conditions of image production carries forward into his late work and its engagement with operational images.
