The purpose of this study was to explore the learning experiences and life changes of middle-aged and older adult learners through a narrative exploration of their English conversation learning experiences in a university language education institute. Three middle-aged and older adult learners enrolled in English conversation courses at a university language education institute participated in the study. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews, and their experiences were reconstructed and interpreted. The findings showed that the participants’ English learning experiences were reconstructed as individual narratives and commonly followed a continuous trajectory from school learning experiences to interruption, re-engagement, and sustained learning. As they continued learning, common patterns emerged in which learning led to positive life changes. First, significant learning experiences, such as meeting a role-model English teacher, academic achievement, and participation in an English conversation circle served as motivations for lifelong learning. Second, participation in learning contributed to expanding social relationships and maintaining balance in daily life. Third, repetitive and practice-oriented learning facilitated transfer to real-life contexts such as daily routines and travel. Fourth, university-based educational resources, including native-speaking instructors and the campus learning environment, played a key role in supporting sustained learning, and they were actively utilizing the educational resources. This study demonstrates that middle-aged and older adult learners are active and self-directed learners who continue to pursue intellectual interests and social interaction. It also suggests the need for lifelong learning support to sustain their continuous participation.
