This study examines the extent to which global inflation synchronization is driven by common shocks arising from value-added trade within global value chains (GVCs). Using panel data for advanced economies, the results show that synchronized inflation is significantly influenced by GVC-related trade channels. In the relatively short run, value-added exports are positively associated with inflation synchronization, whereas trade in intermediate goods exhibits a negative relationship. In the longer run, value-added imports, intermediate goods trade, exchange rates, and money supply exert significant positive effects on synchronized inflation. These findings suggest that the dynamics of inflation synchronization may be mitigated by monetary policy interventions, as well as by supply chain disruptions and increasing trade protection. This study contributes to the literature by identifying value-added trade within GVCs as a key transmission channel underlying cross-country inflation co-movements.
