불교-AI담론의 SF적 전제에 대한 비판적 고찰

A Critical Study on the Science-Fictional Premises of Buddhist-AI Discourse

인공지능(AI)에 의해 초래될 미래상에 대한 불교학계의 연구를 보면 과학 기술적 가능성에 대한 고찰보다 레이 커즈와일의 기술적 특이점(Singularity)가설이나 닉 보스트롬의 슈퍼인텔리전스(Superintelligence)와 같은 트랜스휴머니즘(Transhumanism)적 시각에 의존하는 경향을 보인다. 즉, 인간의 능력을 초월하는 AI의 출현을 전제로 AI 및 로봇의 해탈 가능성, 인간의 마음을 기계 장치에 옮긴다는 마인드 업로딩(mind uploading) 등이 불교 –AI담론을 형성하고 있다. 그러나 특이점 도래에 기반해 초지능 AI의 출현을 낙관하는 트랜스휴머니스트의 전망은 대중적으로 널리 알려져있지만 과학 이론이 아니다. 따라서 이에 대한 비판이 과학적·철학적 관점에서 꾸준히 제기 되어 왔지만 불교학 관련 연구들은 이를 충분히 검토 및 소개하지 않고 있다. 그 결과 SF 영화나 소설이 불교가 예측하는 미래상으로 제시되고 있다. 종교의 특성상 불교 경전에는 추상적이고 비유적인 예시가 빈번히 등장한다. 그러한 표현을 곧바로 초지능 AI 출현의 예언서처럼 보는 해석은 지양되어야 한다. 이러한 시각은 불교와 AI의 소통이 아니라 불교를 SF적 상상력을 뒷받침하는 비현실적인 가르침으로 전락시킬 수 있기 때문이다. 따라서 AI 시대의 바람직한 불교 담론은 변화의 가능성은 열어두되 한계점을 균현있게 고찰하여야 한다. 그것이 붓다의 교설을 시대에 맞게 계승하는 방편이기 때문이다.

Research within Buddhist studies regarding the future shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI) tends to rely heavily on transhumanist perspectives—such as Ray Kurzweil’s “Singularity” and Nick Bostrom’s “Superintelligence”—rather than scrutinizing actual technological possibilities. Consequently, contemporary Buddhist-AI discourse is often built upon the premise of AI surpassing human capabilities, leading to speculative discussions on the enlightenment of robots or “mind uploading.” However, the transhumanist optimism forecasting the inevitable arrival of superintelligence remains a popular narrative rather than a verified scientific theory. Despite persistent scientific and philosophical critiques of these hypotheses, Buddhist scholarship has largely failed to examine or integrate these counterarguments. As a result, science fiction (SF) tropes are frequently presented as the prophetic future of Buddhism. Given the nature of religious texts, Buddhist scriptures abound with abstract metaphors. Interpreting these expressions as direct prophecies of superintelligent AI must be avoided, as such a perspective risks reducing Buddhism to an unrealistic doctrine that merely validates SF imagination rather than fostering genuine dialogue with technology. A desirable Buddhist discourse in the AI era should remain open to the potential for change while maintaining a balanced consideration of its limitations. Such an approach constitutes a skillful means of inheriting the Buddha’s teachings in a manner appropriate for the modern age.
