The characteristics of burial mounds in the Mahan and Baekje regions include their large mounds, the presence of multiple burial facilities within a single mound, and the fact that the buried individuals, based on their size and excavated artifacts, include regional chieftains. While burial mounds with similar characteristics can also be found in Japan, there are many differences in the historical context in which they were constructed. This paper first introduces the situation in the Japanese archipelago from the Yayoi period to the Kofun period, where burial mounds began to have clear “burial boundaries” around the burial facilities, and explains their diverse types and terminology. Subsequently, it provides an overview of the process by which the burial mounds of powerful individuals or groups gradually began to have mounds, becoming what are called burial mounds, and eventually developing into large kofun (ancient burial mounds), reaffirming their regional diversity and roles. Furthermore, by examining the historical and social context, this paper serves as comparative material to extract similarities and differences with the construction of burial mounds in Mahan and Baekje, including the Seosan Bujang-ri site.
