This study examines the stylistic characteristics of the Seven-story Stone Pagoda at Sango-ri, located in the Janggak Valley of Mount Songni, and aims to clarify its construction date and historical background. The pagoda is a typical stone pagoda consisting of a double stylobate and a seven-story body. It exhibits distinctive architectural features, including the use of multiple stone blocks in both the stylobate and body sections, as well as traces of a slab-type finial base. Particular attention is given to such features as the construction method of the lower stylobate, the separately carved support stones of the upper stylobate, the niche-like structure of the body stones, and the use of multiple stone blocks in the superstructure. These characteristics demonstrate both the continuation of Unified Silla stone pagoda traditions and the emergence of new stylistic tendencies that appeared in the early Goryeo period. A comparative analysis with stone pagodas dating to around the tenth century, including the Five-story Stone Pagoda at Bong-eopsa Temple Site, reveals a close stylistic affinity between the two monuments. In contrast, the Sango-ri Pagoda differs in several respects from stone pagodas constructed during the reign of King Gwangjong. Based on these observations, the construction date of the Sango-ri Seven-story Stone Pagoda is estimated to fall between 925 and 948 CE. More specifically, it is likely to have been erected after the Battle of Gochang in 930, when Later Baekje lost control of the Sangju region and the initiative for the unification of the Later Three Kingdoms shifted decisively to Goryeo. The Mount Songni area, where the pagoda is situated, served as an important transportation corridor connecting the Chungcheong and Gyeongsang regions and functioned as a strategic frontier contested by Goryeo and Later Baekje. Considering this historical context, the Sango-ri Seven-story Stone Pagoda was most likely constructed as a commemorative Buddhist monument symbolizing the stabilization of the region and the establishment of Goryeo’s political and military authority in the Mount Songni area during the early Goryeo period.
