A Critical Study on the Statistics of the Publication of Books on Economics in the 1990s

The departure of my study in this thesis is to what extent the publication statistics represents the reality the market. In particular, the discrepancy between the statistics and the reality is critically scrutinized. The discrepancy also leads to raise a fundamental problem of the KDC classification adapted in libraries, by which a full understanding of a real publication market is not available at all. Thus, a new classification is carefully suggested from the view point of publishers which could represent a real publication market, such as general books, academic books, books for examinations and photo-printed books. The new classification is practically applied to the books on economics published for recent 10 years, which produces a new statistics widely different from that produced according to the KDC classification. While the KDC classification approaches book solely from the macro view point, my classification is carried out of into sub-classifications mainly based on purposes and printing methods of books; general, academics, examinations and photo-printed. Based on this classification, the change on books on economics published for recent 10 years are examined in detail according the criteria of a number, copies of each number, an average price. The publishing companies which have published economic books for 10 years are studied too in order to produce a correct statistics of the publication which represents the actual situation of the real publication market. My study has revealed that the publication market in the later 1990s is significantly different from that in the beginning of the 1990s. That is to say, while academic books on economics and business administrations occupied the majority in the publication market in this field, the number of general books on economics came to be the majority as the books concerning the internet business have rapidly increased in the later 1990s. In short, the market for general books expanded drastically in the later 1990s. In order to represent this significant change in the publication market, I put a stress on the new classification which can produce a new statistics of significance examining the books on economics for recent 10 years in this thesis.
