Korean Society's Evolution and Magazine's Development in the New Millennium

With the new millennium, magazines have changed a lot in Korea. IMF has received the most social influence since the late 1990's. It made the Korean economy worse and decreased the people's purchasing power of magazines resulting in the massive decline of sales. On the other hand, IMF helped people realize their awareness in promoting growth. Despite mistrust in the government, the popular movement happened wildly and it influenced magazine market regularly. It was a good example that there were a lot of normal writers who just started to write some story based on their life instead of intellectual class who followed a custom. Next, there was a multimedia trend based on computers and the Internet. As we observed, the multimedia trend made online magazinesappear while getting rid of the custom that used to depend on paper magazines and brought in a new time fusing coexisting methods with offline paper magazine and online web magazine. We especially can't help but become interested in web magazine's various publications and editing that are close to post modernism and reflect the modern pop culture. While the mass media has a strong power to control the public and private education, the magazines that usually deal with a fashion and popularity might distort teenager's mind. Therefore, the justice and social educational function of magazines are very important. The other characteristic of Korean magazines are the subdivision and specialization of magazines. Korean society is changing from industrial to the age of information; we need to gain knowledge and information. As a result, the magazines have to secure their own identity to survive. Korean magazines have also been asked to remove secularization as of the new millennium. We can't help but see that magazines are deteriorating because of their constant influence by people. For example, we need to reconsider purchasing image conscious magazine such as girl's magazines and magazines advertising extravagant and luxurious consumer goods. And so as a reminder of the mass media's social function, we have to remember that magazines have thepower to influence social discussions and to contribute to the formation of desirable pop cultures when considering the future society.
