I propose that a single answer is the wide scope of the wh-word over the QP and that a pair list answer is a special case of a functional answer. Quantification into questions as in May(1985) for the source of the pair list answer is problematic particularly given the cross-linguistic data presented in this paper. Engdahl's(1986) proposal for the functional answer as the source of both the single answer and the pair list answer is too strong, given that scrambled wh-questions admit a single answer only, albeit with no functional answer.
