The History of English, 13. this paper deals primarily with a variety of semantic changes in Shakespearian English, in particular, focusing on semantic changes of vocabularies in his major works. Semantic change is a fact of life. And those who have had to study older works of literature, such as a Shakespeare play, will need no reminding of how much of the vocabulary has been affected by such changes. The Shakespearean impact on the English language was chiefly in the area of the lexicon as the examples in this paper suggests. This paper provides a lot of instances of the way English was developing in Shakespeare's time. Key words: grammatical license, metaphorical use, literary competence, varieties, irregularities
