Shin, Osik & Park, Moonkyou. 2002. Port-Royal's Grammaire generale et raisonnee(1660) and Chomsky's Cartesian Linguistics(1966). The History of English, 13. With his subjective judgment of Descartes linguistic vision, Chomsky committed two major mistakes: one is the assumption of a direct successive relationship between Cartesian and the German linguistics of the Romantic period, and the other is the total negligence of the role of Locke and Condillae whose theories became the basis of a new linguistic tendency during the l &th century. However, we are constrained to accept Chomsky's arguments about the close and suceessive relationship between Port-Royal's grammatical theories and those of 18th century philosophical grammarians because our analysis of their theories of speech parts and tense confirms Chomsky's opinion. The history of English universal grammar, which Chomsky did not treat efficiently or sufficiently, remains for us to perfect. Key words: History of Grammar, Grammaire generale et raisonnee, Universal Grammar, Cartesian Linguistics
