English Language and Linguistics 15, 129-147. the aim of this paper is to explore the semantic characteristics of English durative adjuncts such as for two years and in two years. The previous aspectual classifications based on the aspect of a verb have some significant problems in that they incorrectly explain the facts that aspectual properties can be changed by various faclors and a duiative adjunct used in the same sentence can have different meanings. Furthermore, such classifications cannot explain certain facts with respect to the interaction of tense or negation with these adjuncts. This paper proposes that in order to solve these problems, those classifications must be extended to include situational properties of a sentence. Key words: durative adjuncts.
